Kristen Ashley grew up in Brownsburg, Indiana, and has lived in Denver and the West Country of England. Thus she has been blessed to have friends and family around the globe. Her posse is loopy (to say the least), but loopy is good when you want to write. Kristen was raised in a house with a large and multigenerational family. They lived on a very small farm in a small town in the heartland, and Kristen grew up listening to the strains of Glenn Miller, the Everly Brothers, REO Speedwagon, and Whitesnake.

Disappointing

I was very surprised by this book, because not much happens. The beginning was very exciting, High and Millie "crashing" into each other, etc, after all these years, so much emotion, (I was holding on for epic, here!) but then once they got together, the only "excitement" going on was if High's bratty youngest daughter would ever stop being mean to Millie. Oh boy. Like many other reviewers, I did not like the reason for Millie breaking up with High all those years ago. ***SPOILERS AHEAD!****** All the flashbacks (and there were many which began to sound and feel the same - so many were about the photos that were taken of them, etc) told us what a perfect couple they were from the beginning, passionate, in sync, etc. So her breaking it off with him and him just accepting it made no sense to me. I kept waiting for more. But there was no more, and it wore very thin. Then all that was transformed into "Milie's great sacrifice." Eye roll. It was just BS to me. Also everyone constantly repeating the title of the book..( yep, we got it! ) became really annoying and overdone. And her sacrificing their happiness and love, so he could have "real kids" with another woman (gulp) was also a big NO to me. Just left a sour taste in my mouth the whole way through.

Also, all this time Millie has never " bumped into" High like she does in the first chapter at the fast food place and now she does 20 years later and suddenly she must find him and explain her reasons for dumping him? Really? Suddenly she must explain all to him. So where does she go to find him??? The biker bar they all used to go to and then a biker rally/concert weekend. Seriously? That was just so unreal to me. If she is the serious, logical woman she is portrayed to be, why would she hit up these very public party venues where all the club members are bound to be to go have a "this is why I broke up with you 20 years ago, gee I'm sorry" discussion with the love of her life????!!?? This just seemed like a convenient way to throw in some biker atmosphere and memories for her of the places they used to go to as a happy biker couple.

The huge thing that really baffled me and bothered me was the juvenile way everyone was behaving. The Tyra "got to get involved" shenanigans, Hop's mean song at the nightclub with everyone there...are we in high school?? Nope, so all this was really silly. And no, I don't believe that a woman like Millie didn't have another relationship or that she slept with no one in all those 20 years++. Then why did she walk away from High for?? And everyone including Millie blaming High for treating Millie badly for all the revenge s*x in the beginning was really stupid and immature to me too, of Millie and everybody.

There's plenty of talk about brotherhood, etc, but there's no mc action whatsoever. They patrol their neighborhood for the most part, and yet they consider themselves "outlaws." Okay. For the 3rd Chaos book in a row (since Hop's story, I believe)...Benito the Baddd Guy is mentioned and we get all geared up for-- finally!!-- a big clash and even Tabby's fallen on bad times best friend who is working with the bad guys is mentioned yet again...but really, nothing happens. I did like that Shy's ex Rosalie is in the picture here. Yep, Millie gets kidnapped, and no I don't mind that happening, I got excited for about a minute there. But even that was uneventful and lacked any wow. Yes, the club got all upset and angry over one of their old ladies being taken of course, but the police come in and save the day (huh??) and the club backs down. Of course there is a new plot on the rise here for the next book...one of the bros is going undercover to get Benito. We shall see...at this point, I don't expect very much.

Otherwise the book is mostly about High's daughters getting along or not with Millie. And uh, that's it. Elvira was fun, Malik was nice. Quick visit with Brock and Mitch. Hi Shirleen! The other thing that I found odd was High's ex wife. Yes, it was really nice not to have the typical bitchy mean ex-spouse making things crazy for our new couple and the kids involved, Deb is unruffled, not jealous at all, not a passionate person who needs romantic deep love in her life, okay, but she comes off as being totally NEUTERED and flat. She does likes very expensive designer handbags though, so she's cool! SO once again, the ex is an oddball, no one for us to feel slightly jealous over (phew! High is redeemed!), not just a normal partner in a previous relationship that didn't work. Eye roll again.

Suddenly after so so so much kitchen sink soap opera drama, the book was over. And I almost thought I'd missed something... like a real story. But I was very very surprised (to the point that I even checked back in the book!) that with all the flashbacks, there was no flashback of their infamous breakup. Why not?!? It seemed like it was coming, but it never did. So much was made of it, how shocking and explosive it was, and I was very much looking forward to it..especially now that we knew about Millie's great "sacrifice." I wanted to see High's fury and struggle and all his pain AND Millie's, and why he didn't fight her on it. That was very very strange to me and very lame for such a long winded book. In the end this was an unsatisfying read, which left much to be desired. A lot of oomph, both emotional and action wise, was lacking for me, and I was disappointed.

This book should have been included in Kristen Ashely's "Fantasyland" series. As much as I wanted to like this book I just couldn't buy into the story. It felt like a total fantasy. The world that KA created felt unrealistic and fake. Who would act this way? The 'secret' that Millie had that caused her to break up with High was so stupid that I couldn't believe anyone would ruin their life over that. It just seemed such an over the top melodramatic reaction. And the fact that High who loved Millie more than life and who knew, just KNEW they were meant to be would walk away after one argument and not even fight for his own happiness? I could barely keep reading because it started to feel like I was reading about a book that takes place in Wonderland. It took me out of the story so many times that I just started shaking my head and kept on reading. What was wrong with these people?

Not Believable

Kristen Ashley was a recommendation to me by another great author - Jacqueline Rhoades. Never listening to Jackie again, because that recommendation has cost me several hundred dollars while I worked my way through Ashley's backlist. Lol. By discovering Ashley, I opened a whole new world of badass alpha anti-heros, girly girls who are determined and hard-headed with crazy situations. I have to admit that author Ashley is now one of my favorites. All that said, "Walk Through Fire" was a total yawn for me. One of the beauties of Ashley's romances is her ability to make you BELIEVE. The dialogue is often overwrought, too emotional and even crazy, but you read it and you believe it. I found the romance between High and Millie to just not be believable. From flashbacks into the past, Kristen Ashley succeeded in showing me the deep love and caring between her two characters - a love SO deep that it would be unthinkable to not share the big secret Millie had with High. It just wouldn't have happened. Real love - true love - the kind Ashley creates would have had the two characters staying together even if one was paralyzed and their face destroyed, so the secret that Millie carried was just not a believable plot device. I'm sorry, when I can't believe, I can't become emotionally invested or involved in the story. Others may disagree with me, but I found this plot device and the way it developed to be pretty lame.

With a background in World Religion, an avid meditator, and hobby philosopher, this book actually answered some profound issues I had and did so with concise clarity. My brother for almost a decade has been stuck in the "Everything passes and is therefore meaningless" nihilistic state that has now turned into clinical depression. He wasn't the first to point this out to me and for years I have struggled with questions about death and purpose.

His Holiness Dalai Lama has elegantly answered the question Nihilism proposes, by stating that only co-dependent entities can perform any function. In this, he uses "function" rather than "purpose" although the two are effectively exchangeable. Please read the book to further understand what I mean.

This book has affected me deeply primarily because I did not expect to get this type of information from this book. The subtitle, although cheesy at the onset of reading "How to live a meaningful life", is precisely accurate and the book successfully performs it's described function. I know how to live a meaningful life now. And no, existence is not meaningless, purposeless, or useless. It is precisely meaningful, purposeful, and useful, and now I know why thanks to this book.

He readily admits his own struggles early in his study and this is refreshing. It seems he is meeting us where we are and offering a better way of being in the world. I love this way of teaching, for it is like someone who comes alongside of us and walks a while with us, sharing insight and their own experience. Thank you, Teacher.

In the aftermath of the conquest of the Holy Land by the Romans and their destruction of the Jerusalem Temple in 70 CE, Jews were faced with a world in existential chaos―both they and their God were rendered homeless. In a religious tradition that had equated Divine approval with peaceful dwelling on the Land, this situation was intolerable. So the rabbis, aspirants for leadership of the post-destruction Jewish community, appropriated inherited traditions and used them as building blocks for a new religious structure. Not unexpectedly, given the circumstances, this new rabbinic formation devoted considerable attention to matters of space and place.

Rabbinic Judaism: Space and Place offers the first comprehensive study of spatiality in Rabbinic Judaism of late antiquity, exploring how the rabbis reoriented the Jewish relationship with space and place following the destruction of the Jerusalem temple. Drawing upon the insights of theorists such as Tuan and LeFebvre, who define the crisis that "homelessness" represents and argue for the deep relationship of human societies to their places, the book examines the compositions of the rabbis and discovers both a surprisingly aggressive rabbinic spatial imagination as well as places, most notably the synagogue, where rabbinic attention to space and place is suppressed or absent. It concludes that these represent two different but simultaneous rabbinic strategies for re-placing God and Israel―strategies that at the same time allow God and Israel to find a place anywhere.

This study offers new insight into the centrality of space and place to rabbinic religion after the destruction of the Temple, and as such would be a key resource to students and scholars interested in rabbinic and ancient Judaism, as well as providing a major new case study for anthropologists interested in the study of space.

The Will to Brevity...

No one can reasonably expect to sum up Nietzche's views and philosophy in under 100 pages. The reader should not go into this work expecting to come out understanding Nietzsche, but maybe make him a little less obscure or receive a slight bit more context in which to read Nietzsche's books. For those who have already read some Nietzsche and are left nonplussed, this tiny book may help you out as well (it did me).
The book follows Nietzsche's publications more or less in chronological order. The longest and most difficult chapter is the one on "The Birth of Tragedy." This work gets the most attention of all of Nietzsche's works, presumably because it is easier to "sum up" or encapsulate than any of his other works. For instance, the section on "The Genealogy of Morals" will leave you wondering what the book is about (in fact, reading the book itself may also have this effect - it's a tad difficult).
"Morality and its Discontents" is one of the most illuminating chapters, and will shed some light on Nietzsche's proclamation that "God is dead" which is probably his most infamous and misunderstood concept (there's also a lot more meat to it than the eternal recurrence and the Ubermensch, which Tanner points out).
Overall I agree with Tanner's assessment of Nietzsche's "Thus Spake Zarathustra." It was the first book of his I read, and I came out of the experience energized, but I had no idea why. "Zarathustra" is a passionate but potentially misleading read. It's nothing like his other works, and introduces concepts that never come up again, though they seem to be of utmost importance in the context of the book (i.e., the eternal recurrence, Ubermensch, and the will to power - at least in his published works).
The pace of Tanner's book quickens and the delineation of Nietzsche's texts becomes more and more sparse towards the final few chapters. There is very little information about Nietzsche's insanity, or Lou Salom� or even the details of his life. The book is almost completely dedicated to Nietzsche's philosophy. In fact, the book ends as abruptly as Nietzsche's own sane life must have. There's a slight feeling of "so what's next?!?" at the end of the last and shortest chapter that discusses the works of 1888 in a flash.
Nietzsche is a huge subject, and his books are thick conceptually if not physically. He was a thinker that wanted to teach us to think differently, which makes him a valuable read no matter what your stance on the views he covers. This minute book will help you peek through the keyhole of this enormous and overwhelming subject.
Lastly, Richard Wagner figures hugely in Nietzsche's work. Knowing more about Wagner will only elucidate some of Nietzsche's works and concepts. Tanner also supports this view.

Grandiloquent Slog

If, like me, you struggle with Nietzsche's almost self-consciously opaque writings, Michael Tanner would like to offer his services as a Virgil to guide you through this particular tangled wood. A noted Nietzsche scholar, Tanner's years of immersion in the field help dispell common myths that have accrued to the Great Man's name. But unfortunately, he often falls prey to the same limitations that make Nietzsche's own books such a tough slog.

Tanner starts with a brief overview of Nietzsche's life. Not much of one, though. Tanner demonstrates little interest in Nietzche as a person, limiting such intrusions to where we absolutely need them to understand his subject's thoughts. Though I tend to see the producer and the product as a piece, Tanner would rather respect Nietzsche himself, who explicitly disagrees.

From there, Tanner moves through the canonical texts, mainly (though not exclusively) in chronological order. His in-depth analyses clarify at least the earliest texts. Tanner is remarkably forthright, pointing out contradictions and elisions that the author evidently missed or ignored in his own work. He even points out places where Nietzsche made points just one time in his early books, then took it for granted that we'd remember his intent for the rest of his career.

But as the subject matter gets more intense, Tanner's writing becomes more elliptical. He lapses into the same grandiloquent academese that makes Nietzsche such tough sledding for lay readers. I can't make heads or tales out of some passages, even after multiple readings. I suspect Tanner can't either, at least on the evidence of a particularly dense paragraph about halfway through, which Tanner concludes by essentially throwing his hands in the air and sighing, "That, at any rate, is how I understand it, and him."

Tanner has simplified certain points about Nietzsche for me. I now understand some of my own reading mistakes, not least my own desire to find through-lines which don't exist, and starting in later books without the prior assumptions Nietzsche expects me to bring from earlier texts. But in terms of actually understanding the conclusions and resolutions I ought to gain from the books, I'm only marginally wiser than when I started out. Perhaps I'm naive, but I expect "A Very Short Introduction" to be more introductory, and less jargon-rich, than this.

Interesting -- but not a good introduction for newcomers to Nietzsche

This brief book on Nietzsche contains many good things, though I'm pretty confident that it is not a very good introduction to his thought. Twenty years ago when I was studying philosophy in grad school I read through most of Nietzsche's works at one time or another and delved fairly deeply into the secondary literature. I picked this up as something of a refresher, but was quite surprised at what a poor job it did at explaining and summarizing what Nietzsche said and why he said it. The book's main interest comes from its analysis of where Nietzsche's thought fails to maintain coherence as well as some misunderstandings of his thought by various scholars. The book is useful as a corrective and at pointing out where Nietzsche sometimes fails to make sense, but this is pretty far down the list of books that I would recommend as an introduction. As such, it is one of my least favorite of the books that I've read in Oxford's Very Short Introduction series.

Even if one thinks that much of what Nietzsche says, however important it may be despite that, ultimately fails to be coherent, it is essential before saying why what he says is wrong, to say as clearly as possible what it is that he does say. The problems become pretty early in the book. The summary of THE BIRTH OF TRAGEDY is patchy and barely explains -- which is what one would expect in an introduction -- the contrast between the Dionysian and the Apollonian. Tanner nicely explains Nietzsche's idea that suffering is the central fact of human existence, but the content of many of his books is left something less than clear. Worst of all, Tanner -- despite in the final section of the book writing that he assumes that everyone will grasp how much he admires Nietzsche -- doesn't make clear why Nietzsche is important. He doesn't explain precisely why Nietzsche is regarded as one of the most important thinkers of the past two centuries.

In short, I do not think that this is a good first book for those wanting to explore Nietzsche's thought. The truth is that while there are several excellent books on Nietzsche, most of these are for people who are already familiar with at least some aspects of his work. There is one book that I would recommend as a first introduction, R. J. Hollingdale's intellectual biography. The problem with that one is that it is only available in a ridiculously high priced paperback (I own what was in the 1980s a very reasonably priced paperback). Hollingdale, Nietzsche's most important translator into English after Kaufmann, writes clearly and sympathetically about Nietzsche. Like Tanner I am not a fan of Walter Kaufmann's famous work on Nietzsche. Like Tanner I am a big fan of Alexander Nehamas's book, but it is definitely not an introductory work. Despite this, he is a brilliant writer, often writing breathtaking passages, with many unforgettable sentences. However one is introduced to his thought, he repays the effort.

First of all, the workbook pages were missing and this has happened in 3 copies of this textbook that I have purchased. Even "new" books were often missing pages. I recommend trying to buy this book from Alibris or Abe Books. Honestly, professors need to stop assigning this book because it is outdated and unhelpful.

Con: Do not buy a used book, the homework is suppose to be done in the book and even though my usedbook looked brand new it was missing 3 chapters.

After her husband's fatal heart attack, which came at a time when their daughter Quintana was in intensive care for complications after pneumonia, Didion was labeled "a pretty cool customer" by a social worker because she seemed to be handling these shocks so calmly. Caruso's reading certainly reflects this aspect of Didion's reaction—sometimes her clear, elegant voice seems downright cold, making the listener wish for a little more emotion. The slightly eerie sounds of bells and cello that swell in at occasional breaks in the narration help in this respect, but mostly the audiobook is as straightforward a production as Didion wanted her life to be in that horrible year. Throughout those months, Didion immersed herself in the literature of grief and quotes frequently from poets and writers who helped her come to terms with her pain. Caruso does a good job with these passages, lingering on and highlighting certain phrases that Didion returns to time and again, shifting their meaning slightly as she progresses. Despite trying to write in an almost clinically detached way, Didion's sorrow and anger do break through at times in the book. Unfortunately, Caruso's cool reserve never cracks, so this audio ends up making less of an impact than the National Book Award– winning print edition.

Didion's husband, the writer John Gregory Dunne, died of a heart attack, just after they had returned from the hospital where their only child, Quintana, was lying in a coma. This book is a memoir of Dunne's death, Quintana's illness, and Didion's efforts to make sense of a time when nothing made sense. "She's a pretty cool customer," one hospital worker says of her, and, certainly, coolness was always part of the addictive appeal of Didion's writing. The other part was the dark side of cool, the hyper-nervous awareness of the tendency of things to go bad. In 2004, Didion had her own disasters to deal with, and she did not, she feels, deal with them coolly, or even sanely. This book is about getting a grip and getting on; it's also a tribute to an extraordinary marriage.

A Klidoscope of death and grieving

Joan Didion after the first 60 pages has become a kindred spirit to me through her writing. There is no recipe for grieving and at times it's like your in someone elses house and can not find anything you need. Words, sentences you've spoken but can not remember. Places and going through the motions but did you really do it or you just thought so. The Awful power of grief can derange the mind. Thoughts, sights, smells, the physical body are stretched so thin it's beyond reality and fantasy.
When my dearest husband died, I lost days, forget phone numbers, people's names, whether I showered. Reading this book provides me with somber reality that not just myself had entered the dark whirlpool of which I was too weak and lost to find my way out. This book as allowed me to read about my own road of grief... Which is not close to ending. And

Sad and Illuminating

Although I am not a fan of memoirs, I found Didion's memoir of the first year after the loss of her husband both sad and illuminating.

Sad, because, nine months ago, we lost my beloved father. I've had to watch my Mom grieve the end of one of life's grand love affairs - the passionate love affair between my parents, which lasted nearly 60 years.

Illuminating because, at times, Didion expresses her personal grieving in such a universal way that her loss became my Mother's loss. Didion gave a voice to the process of grief that my Mom, a widow, is experiencing and which I, a still-married daughter, have not yet experienced.

That Dunne brought deep meaning into Didion's life is unquestionable; her struggle to control or somehow change the events of that year, at times, makes fascinating reading because one senses that her emotions, her sens of loss are deep so that if she touched on them, she probably wouldn't cope.

But, while reading, I was struck by another level of sadness: at the hospital, which declared her husband dead, the social worker said of Didion's reaction, "It's okay; she's a pretty cool customer."

I constantly found myself asking, where ARE her emotions? What IS she feeling?

She could, and did, articulate the practical details of her year of grieving in microscopic detail, but there were times when I found her determined and strong-willed focus on medical facts, and the logistics of Dunne's death and her daughter's illness, disconcerting. Understandable, yes, and sad because it suggested a desperate attempt at mastering her overwhelming loss, but still disconcerting. She is, as the social worker said, "a pretty cool customer," and she manages to keep her deepest emotions very private.

The title of the book explains a lot: THE YEAR OF MAGICAL THINKING. "Magical" to me has a wondrous, positive connotation; the word implies exciting events that take the ordinary and somehow transform them into the extraordinary. I only understood how Didion could apply it to the year following the death of her husband, a year in which her only child lay dying, when I looked up the meaning in the dictionary for this review.

Rather than the magic in her title meaning `an enchanting quality or phenomenon' or `wonderful, exciting,' the MAGICAL in Didion's title relies more on the definition of "magic" as `the supposed art of influencing the course of events by the occult control of nature or of the spirits.'

Because, to me, that's where the sadness in this book really lies: Didion's desperate desire to influence, to change by some power she didn't have, the death of her husband. And, even when, she couldn't "bring him back," she still had to go through the process of accepting that death is a part of life. That no matter how privileged, or intelligent, or talented, or lucky one is, no matter how many famous names one can drop, death comes to us all: "Golden lads and girls all must, as chimney-sweepers, come to dust." (Shakespeare, Cymbeline, Act IV, Sc ii)

For Didion, there was no magic in her year of grieving. No amount of intellectualising her grief could change that ordinary moment when, at the dinner table, her beloved husband died. He was gone and, to resume her life, she had to "relinquish the dead, let them go, keep them dead" and move into a future beyond grief and beyond mourning.

Touched many nerves

I am a widow of eleven months, having lost my husband suddenly at the age of 58 (he had just celebrated that birthday 13 days earlier, I was 57) to the same sudden "widow-maker" heart attack, though my husband's was not preceded by any warning or foreshadowing at all - and I found this book to be one of the most helpful and relatable of the many I have read so far. In her easy to read style Didion gives true description to the inexplicable and uncontrollable thoughts and reactions she and women like me have experienced with the sudden loss of a husband with whom we had built a rich and sustaining marriage. I found myself agreeing with and relating to many things she described, though her story was complicated by her daughter's grave illness which pre-dated and continued after her husband's death. I recommend this book to those who have been widowed and are struggling through the confusion of grief or family or friends of someone in that circumstance.
