A book club book!

I purchased this book off Amazon.com for a local Mother’s Center book club I am in and I am so glad I did! The Rosie Project is about a Don Tillman who is a professor of genetics at a college, who decides he is done with dating and he wants to find a wife. he has a “quirky” personality and was never diagnosed with it but his friends, Claudia and Gene are pretty sure he has very high functioning form of Aspergers. He schedules his day down to the minute including how long dinner should take and his showers. When he decides to find a wife he comes up with this 30 page survey for women to fill out so it will weed out the ones that aren’t perfect for him therefore he doesn’t have to go on dates that will “waste his valuable time.” During this project he meets Rosie, who he mistaken as one of the ladies who was taking the survey. After one date, Rosie tells him that her mother slept with another man and the man that has raised her is not actually her father. That leads to a joint project called The Father Project that Rosie and Don meet up to find who her real father is and the relationship goes from there.

I loved this book and I am going to give it 5 stars! It is categorized as a romantic comedy book and it was just that. It wasn’t a super sappy romantic read which I think I really enjoyed. The situations that Don got himself into were just so funny and I laughed out loud many times throughout the novel.

The writer did an awesome job with character development which can kill the book or make the book. It wasn’t draggy, you found out who each character was and how they fit into the story and each one was memorable. My biggest complaint with books is when they mention a character and then later on mention them again and I have to flip back to figure out who the author is talking about and I did not have to do that with this book.

Even though there is a second book in this series it wraps the story up in the first so you really don’t have to read the second if you do not want to. The second book just goes into what happens next in their lives. I will be reading it soon, so keep a look out for “The Rosie Effect” review in the next month or two.

In conclusion, if you love situational comedy in your books and a little bit of a love story this novel is for you!

Deceptively Complex RomCom: A Delight

I loved the "The Rosie Project" – at least, right up to the very end. I was captivated by Don’s view of his world and his nearly-astute, yet unknowingly skewed, interpretations of his interactions with others. I’ve known and loved people like Don and was rooting for him from the first. I so enjoyed how Don compartmentalized and tracked every aspect of his life with neat little packets: The Standardized Meal System, The Wife Project, and The Rosie Project. All through the first part of the book, I found myself laughing out loud; not laughing at Don, but enjoying him, amused by his views on life and his obliviousness to his many social errors. The conceit Simsion used to bring Rosie into Don’s life was also fun, interesting, and informative.
But I thought Simsion flung us into his ending without first having laid sufficient ground-work for the reader to be with Don in his “Aha!” moment. Instead of delighting that Don had figured out how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together, I was left trying to figure out what the heck just happened: what did it mean? what were the clues I missed along the way? I was disappointed in the jarring ending to such an engaging book.
[Because I was our discussion leader for "The Rosie Project," I felt compelled to do the research to fully grasp the implications of the ending and how it explained the several perplexing episodes in the book. Once I had put it all together (The Affair to Hide, The Basement Disclosure, The Wavering Stepfather, The Knock-Down Punch, Keeping Promises), I came to admire the skill with which Simsioin had woven all these threads. He had carefully constructed his humor so we were rolling on the floor laughing – never at Don, but always cheering him on. Hiding within the pages of this comedic romance was a plethera of information about many of the issues facing people with Asperger Syndrome. And, yes, I even found the delight in Don’s solving of the jigsaw puzzle. It just took me far too much work to get to that full understanding. Then again, completing my research might have gone whole lot quicker if I hadn’t had to keep rereading the marvelously hilarious scenes I kept stumbling upon in my search for answers. Now, what the heck was it I came to this chapter to find?… I highly, highly recommend this book.]

This story will pull on your heartstrings while you laugh out loud.

I am an independent reviewer. This book is the first book in the Don Tillman series and ends in an HEA.

Don is a 40 year old man with Asberger's syndrome. He decides he is ready for a wife and goes about finding her using scientific methods. I love that this book does not portray Don as having a disease. Even he realizes that he is wired differently from most everyone else. His attempts to find a wife are hysterical. I found myself agreeing with his intent, if not his methods.

The reader is introduced into the relationship between his only two friends, who are married to each other. Seen through Don's eyes, their marriage is a perfectly acceptable open marriage, when in actuality the relationship is riddled with adultery.

When Don meets Rosie and decides to help her find her biological father, his ordered life is changed forever. Don's journey to become more socially acceptable, while staying true to himself is such a beautiful story.

The story is told from Don's point of view only. I wondered what Rosie's point of view would be like? It was obvious she was hurt by Don, unknown to him, multiple times. What exactly drew her to him?

This book is by turns funny (practicing sex positions with a skeleton?) and heartbreaking (his non relationship with his family and how he is always laughed at). This book is appropriate for a young adult (16+) to adult audience. I am giving this story 5 stars.

A More Meaningful Read Thirty Years Later

This book was brought to me by my now deceased grandfather more than 30 years ago. He was a fan of John Gunther Sr., and was deeply touched by John Jr.'s indomitable and loving spirit. As a young teen, I too was impressed with John Jr. I recently thought of the book when someone mentioned the actor Robby Benson. As a nurse and more importantly a mother of three, including a boy of Jr.s age, I felt a need to reread this memoir. I was immediately struck by three things: how far medicine has come since the late 1940s, the beautiful writing style of the author, and of course the depth and commitment of both of John Jr.s parents as they came together despite being divorced to love, and help make their son's journey easier. Part of what really touched my heart was the way each parent met John Jr.s needs in such different manners. This book could have turned into a maudlin "why us" story. The fact that it never did is both a testament to the author himself, and the very special young man at the center of the memoir. It is a wonderful read that spans the test of time. Additionally, I would like to add that despite all of medicine's advances, even now in the 21rst century, a similar diagnosis is just as serious, as I am reading another touching memoir called " Maryn's Hope-Memoir of a Beautiful Life by her mother Annette Cells.

A book for the ages!

I first read this book in middle school in English. I was captivated by it then. Pretty soon after, I saw the movie, which was very well done with great portrayals of Mr and Mrs Gunther and Johnny. One can't help but wonder what contributions John Gunther Jr would have made had he survived. I read this book many times as a teenager and young adult and decided to revisit it. As a mother of 4twenty somethings it was from a different perspective that I read it this time and it gave it even more depth and heartbreaking pathos. I wonder what the medical community would have been able to do for Johnny had he been born a few decades later.

I read this book in college. It has stayed with me through the years. With the recent news of Lauren Hill and Brittany Maynard I thought of this book and wondered how it held up and if it had things to say . So many of contemporary stories seem shallow when they broach this subject.

Death Be Not Proud is a touching today as it was the first time I read it. The forward and prolog are amazing. For many the actual daily progress of the disease may be hard to read. As a retired nurse, it doesn't hit me the way I imagine many laymen may respond to the progress of the disease and the treatments.... But stay with it... Read all the notes and letters at the end...for me it made Johnny alive....to watch him grow in the letters he wrote as a child make it even more touching and sad to see this disease and the loss of such lives. I wonder what he could have done with his life...the same way I wonder about Anne Frank... And now Lauren and Brittany.

About the Author

Anthony Williams is a UK-based developer and consultant with many years experience in C++. He has been an active member of the BSI C++ Standards Panel since 2001, and is author or coauthor of many of the C++ Standards Committee papers that led up to the inclusion of the thread library in the new C++ Standard, known as C++11 or C++0x. He has been the maintainer of the Boost Thread library since 2006, and is the developer of the just::thread implementation of the C++11 thread library from Just Software Solutions Ltd. Anthony lives in the far west of Cornwall, England.

Outstanding!

I just finished reading this book--twice! The second half requires careful study to get the most out of it. This is really an OUTSTANDING piece of work. The writing is clear and all the code examples are precisely to the point. Virtually zero fluff in this entire book. You can only imagine how much work he put into designing and debugging the programs so that they are so clean. Well, I didn't notice any bugs in the code, but I didn't try to run them yet and his narrative shows that his attention to detail goes way beyond a quick code review.
Here are the things I liked most about this book: 1) it thoroughly uses C++11 features, including std::move, etc. 2) it's comphrehensive coverage of threading; and 3) it includes code and design discussion for a complete thread pool.
In my opinion there are only a few shortcomings: 1) The discussions of packaged_task, promise, spinlock, and fences/barries wasn't elaborate enough to help me really learn when/where to use these tools. Futures and async were covered thoroughly, but not these other topics. There was comment about spinlock unblocking the current thread that I didn't understand.
2) There are many places where the author/editor could have tied more narrative to the bullets in the code. That's a nifty feature of this book series, and it worked very well in this book, except that in some places it should have been done more. A couple of tricky lines of code had no comment, e.g. how the handle() function works in the message passing example. The chaining syntax is unusual and needs more explanation.
3) spinlock, and a few other topics, are not in the index.
4) It would be very helpful to see a brief example program that would report the relative performance of an analogous data structure class from the lock-based chapter vs. the lock-free chapter. This would give the reader a glimpse as to when the added complexity pays off.

This is a useful book for me because this is the first book ...

This is a useful book for me because this is the first book I found on the new C++ Threads that came in the new C++ standard.
This book is a mixture of "tutorial" and "reference" manual as in:
The author sometimes introduces items before they are explained so you may have to skip around a bit to work through the discussions.
This is NOT a book to learn about C++11.
You will have to navigate a fair number of those new C++11 features in this book. This can be distracting but probably should be expected since this is part of the whole C++11 package.

Overall this is a useful reference book. I haven't found another book on the subject to compare it to. For the time being I give it 4 stars.

Best Multithreading Programming Book Using C++11

There are quite a lot of books covering C++ multithreading programming books which ranges from posix thread programming to Win32 programming. However, there are few books that cover the concurrency and thread programming as in C++11 standard. In addition, the author himself is a contributor to this part of C++11 standard.

That said, it doesn't qualify the book as best automatically. The real reason for that I think is the examples are very clearly explained in the book and the framework used in the book seem to be very adaptable to your real-world project easily. In that sense, it is really a practical multithreading programming book.

One caveat though: This book would not teach C++ programming and not even C++11 even if you have some fine grasp of C++. I recommend you get hold of The C++ Programming Language (B. Stroustrup, 4th Edition) or C++ Primer (S. Lippman etc., 5th Edition). The book itself may need some clarification in some place, for example, it should really talk about using -lpthread for linking since it discusses various compilers for C++11 anyway. However, given the aforementioned need of a C++11 text to accompany it, I would still rank this book a 5-star as those minor problems could be figured out easily given books above or you can easily find answers from stackoverflow.com etc.

Very helpful book!

I bought this book hoping to help my daughter who was really struggling with making friends, keeping friends and choosing the right friends. It was painful watching her struggle and I had no clue how to help.

My plan was to read the book through and then go through it with my 12-year-old daughter. She found the book laying around and read it cover to cover in a few hours and watched the dvd. Because she read it so quickly I was doubtful that she had read the whole thing until she started flipping to different parts of the book and telling me what she learned. I KNEW for certain that she had read the book when she was introduced to a boy she had never met. Having read the book I could see her going literally by the book. I could tell because I read the book, but nobody else noticed.

As a couple years have gone by she has gotten a lot better in social situations. People have commented on the huge change they've seen. I know she still goes by the book in her head because we were talking about eye contact recently and she pretty much told me everything the book had to say about eye contact. Her choices in friends has improved a lot.

I don't think any 12-year-old can pick up the book and understand it. Part of my daughter's disorder is she is incredibly intelligent. It took me a few days to read the book. The book may not work for all kids, but I would recommend trying it.

One of my daughter's therapists who has worked with my daughter before and after she read the book bought and read the book because we talked so highly of it. The therapist has recommended the book to other patients. I bought the book for her school guidance counselor because she was so impressed with how my daughter went from being in her office almost daily to not seeing her for weeks.

Excellent book content, DVD could use some work

I ordered this for my teenage son, who has Asperger's, and encouraged him to read a chapter a day over the summer. While he's never going to be Mr. Charismatic, regardless of how many books like this he reads, I do think it helped him to better understand and cope with a variety of social situations that had previously caused him anxiety. His counselor at school told me that a few of his teacher have noticed him making more of an effort to engage with other kids this year, and he's made a friend in one of his afternoon classes. While my I appreciated the effort that was made to include a DVD with actors dramatizing different situations, the stiff acting made us cringe. I suppose it's saying something that even my Aspie son could tell that the actors' reactions were, at times, forced and unnatural. In the plus column, laughing at the often ridiculous acting made reading the book something to look forward to. Overall, I'm pleased that I bought it, and would recommend it to other parents with ASD kiddos in middle or high school.

REAL RESULTS!

I can't say enough good about this book! This book is extremely well researched and well written! I had three of our children do all the lessons (over a 14 week period) and the results were very tangible. I had purchased the book for our 13 year old son, as he has aspergers-like symptoms. Yet, we did the lessons with all our children. Our 15 year old daughter (who is socially well adjusted) said she felt she got just as much out of the book as her 13 year old brother. Her social confidence was greatly improved. Best of all, she no longer personalized teasing from her peers. Our 13 yr old now makes good eye contact and actually attunes to people. Previously, he had poor eye contact and was awkward. His change was the greatest. He has acquired a social awareness and grace he never had. He actually hosted a party and was called "the social one in the group." Wow! What a change from being socially oblivious and staying home alone a lot.
Overall, my children's confidence grew immensely. When you buy the book, I recommend, watching the accompanying DVD, and doing ALL the homework assignments. Doing the homework assignments each week was critical to success. We implemented a point/reward system for homework done. I would also, search Liz Laugeson on YouTube. She has some helpful videos out. Kids in the house has some great video clips of her too; as does IMFAR/Alex Plank.
I have purchased three copies of this book for family and friends. Anyone teen-age and above, will benefit from this book, but it is perfect for kids on the autism spectrum. It is the best book on social skills I have found so far.

Helpful info but you have to drag the information out of the writer

The first 100 pages were absolutely daunting for me. I am not a romance novel or any type of novel reader for that matter, so I threatened to quit reading it several times, but after the first 100 pages it started giving some information. There was a huge build up of all of this brilliant information that the ancient and wise "Claudia" was going to eventually unload and it barely was a slow trickle finally getting to the point. I can tell that a lot of work went into creating a story to wrap around what could have been a nice, compact instructional on how to better understand men. As a researcher, I would have much preferred a list of what to do and what not to do, with the rationales and sources. Had it not been for "Karen's" notes that were clearly laid out in short, bullet style lists (after each "lesson" with the old wise woman "Claudia"), I would have never wrapped my mind around the point. Bravo Alison for putting the notes in to bring nerds like me back to the point. Apparently most women like novel type books, hence the high ratings here on Amazon. I am not one of those women, but I do appreciate the point.

POINTS OF THE BOOK:
1.)WE EMASCULATE MEN.
2.)MEN DO NOT THINK LIKE WOMEN. WE PUNISH MEN BECAUSE WE THINK THAT THEY ARE JUST HAIRY WOMEN MISBEHAVING, BUT THEY THINK NOTHING LIKE US BECAUSE THEY HAVE FOCUSED AWARENESS (ONE MINDEDNESS/ CAN GO TO TARGET AND GET THE ONE THING THEY WENT IN FOR) AND WE HAVE DIFUSE AWARENESS (NOTICE EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE AT ONE TIME).(Which is why they will step over clothes in the floor to get to whatever thing they were set on doing.. they never see the clothes, and we punish them by nagging as though they did see the clothes and refused to help)
3.)MEN NEED TO BE PROVIDERS AND HEROES. USE THESE WORDS (called the language of heroes in the book)AND BUILD UP YOUR MAN. MAKE HIM ADORE YOU WITH YOUR CHARMS AND EDIFICATION AND HE WILL BEGIN TO LIFT YOU UP AND WANT TO PLEASE YOU.

Every woman, young or not, married or not, in a romantic relationship or not should have this information. There is no chance for relationships with men if we do not change of paradigm. This is the most powerful paradigm shifter I have ever found on this regard.

From a man's perspective... This blew my mind.

Being a masculine man, I rarely cry. But I have to admit that I cried through the first half of this book (in a manly way, of course).

I have to say that this book blew my mind. Having a feminist mother and growing up in a time when men have been looked down upon for being men, I grew up knowing masculine shame.

When I got out of high school, that shame turned into anger... anger towards women. And the first decade of my grownup dating life was filled with destructive relationships, lots of pain and frustration, and copious amounts of blame. I thought relationships were about fighting to get your needs met.

I thought women just wanted to hurt and humiliate men.

It wasn't until I was 28 when I thought to myself... "There must be a better way."

This book outlines that better way... at least part of it. Relationships are about partnership now... where two people work together to get their needs met. You get into a relationship because of how you enrich each others lives.

If you are currently struggling with your relationships to men... like you're angry at men... you think they're liars and cheaters... you think they aren't trust worthy... then GET THIS BOOK.

It will help you change your perspective on men and how relationships COULD be. Powerful stuff. I recommend it for women AND for men.
