Unnecessary if you've read Lanza's Biocentrism

The full case is made in the book cited and is full of the details making his case. Jed McKenna's Theory of Everything (and also his trilogy) make a very similar case from a different point of view by the unusual perspective of the author. Adding the movie "Her", to the mix, it adds another facet to the nature of consciousness that makes the film stunning when all these sources are considered. Rethinking Immortality is thought provoking on its own and deserves a read if you're looking for something brief but without a fuller story. The 4 stars I gave with that proviso.

An interesting read. Very original and thought provoking (although the guy is probably wrong.)

Lanza's thesis requires that the Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics is correct, in that for an event to occur an observer must conduct a measurement of the event. That is, the probabilistic wave function of the event must collapse into the single event that happens.
From there, Lanza follows a trail of logic to conclude that time and space do not exist in reality. They are merely mental constructs. The universe did not exist in reality until it was witnessed by some conscious life form. Until then, it was just a probability distribution.
And, of course, we don't see reality. What our brain perceives is our model of reality. So reality is, to a large extent, subjective.
In such a short review I can't do justice to Lanza's train of thought. And I must admit that I don't see how he arrives at the conclusion that we might be immortal.
But, if you believe that Schroedinger's cat is both alive and dead at the same time, you can start from that and arrive at some weird conclusions. It's a fun read.
Personally, I find many worlds more plausible than the idea that the universe requires conscious observers to exist. But Lanza's book is an entertaining ride.

The 155mm assault gun M53 was developed with components taken from M47 Patton medium tanks during the Cold War. The M53, with its 155 mm primary gun, delivered long range support to allied positions, and its self-propelled design enabled it to travel great distances. The M53 eventually saw action with both the United States Army and Marine Corps. Pacific Car & Foundry Company was responsible for assembly. Beginning in 1956, the United States Army upgraded its M53 line to the M55. The M55 was a fully armored self-propelled artillery based on the M53 155mm assault gun. It had a 203.2 mm howitzer which could traverse 30� left or right, carrying only 10 rounds of ammunition. The gun had a maximum range of 16,916 meters with a rate of fire of one round every two minutes. The engine was mounted in the front and drove through a front-drive sprocket. The driver's cupola is visible on the front left of the turret, and spare track blocks were stored on the turret front. The M55 saw action during the Vietnam War, and was then withdrawn from US military service. Created in 1957, this field manual reveals a great deal about the M53’s design and capabilities. Intended as a commander’s manual for training crew members, it details many methods of attaining effecient teamwork while operating the gun. Drills are described in detail, with the ultimate goal being the successful operation of the M53 and M55 on the battlefield. Originally labeled restricted, this manual was declassified long ago and is here reprinted in book form. Care has been taken to preserve the integrity of the text.

Like many other ships used by the Merchant Marine, the Marine Transport Line's Marine Electric was very old and made of “dirty steel” (steel with excess sulfur content). Many of these vessels were in terrible condition and broke down frequently. Yet the government persistently turned a blind eye to the potential dangers, convinced that the economic return on keeping these ships was worth the risk.

Until the Sea Shall Free Them re-creates in compelling detail the wreck of the Marine Electric and the legal drama that unfolded in its wake. Beneath the surface of Frump's overblown, melodramatic writing style lies the intriguing story of Robert Cusick, one of only three crew members to survive the sinking of the Marine Electric, a coal ship that ran aground in the waters off Norfolk, Va., in 1983. Cusick knew that the vessel, a converted WWII rust bucket, was riddled with problems that had not been addressed by its owner. The book chronicles not only its foundering, but also Cusick's fight to expose the system that fostered such an avoidable tragedy, as Frump revisits the story for which he won two national reporting awards when he broke it for the Philadelphia Inquirer. While the account does boast a wealth of facts and details, it is undone by Frump's purple prose. In a typical passage, he writes, "And then, when Kelly could go no higher, as he tried to climb another rail that wasn't there, climb toward the sky away from it all, the sea was upon him. He bellowed into the storm with all his might.... A plaintive, savage, primordial cry, a desperate hollering for help, the sort of sound a zebra might make as the lions bring it down." Frump also employs a staccato, ersatz Hemingway tempo that quickly grows old: "The flames did not care. The steel did not care. Most particularly, the ocean did not care." While Cusick's struggle is noble, it is overshadowed and rendered ineffective by such histrionics.

Good recount of the events and aftermath of the Marine Electric

Well researched account of the events and aftermath of the loss of the Marine Electric. It is good to see how far we have come. It is also worth noting the eerie similarities to the recent loss of the El Faro. Both were older Jones Act vessels. Both were scheduled for replacement and making their final few runs. Both seem to have not accounted for the weather.

This book is DOA

Be advised, believe it or not, this book is ALL text. There are absolutely NO photos, maps, charts, or drawings. How can you possibly tell the story of a ship sinking with nothing but text? The Marine Electric had a fascinating history as a WW2 T-2 tanker that was converted into a bulk freighter. Where are the builder's photos? WW2 era shots? Conversion diagrams or plans? The navigation charts showing the wreck site? This book was obviously written by an amateur, you can tell by the rambling, over the top prose, lengthy, asides that distract from the story line, and the lack of willingness to research and pay for photos and other visual aids. The book is written for someone unfamiliar with ships and the sea since it goes into explanations of the simplest marine terms that most people interested in reading the book would already know. $24.95 brand new? I don't think so Tim. Buy it used and don't pay more than $7.00 with shipping. I bought it sight unseen, what a dissapointment!

The product I'm actually reviewing is the 1985 edition, ISBN 0-8358-0515-8. Amazon has mistakenly attached reviews for the Revised Edition of 2006, ISBN 978-0-8358-9874-4. I ordered without realizing there were two editions, and did not get what I thought I was getting. These are NOT the same book, but I might as well talk about both of them since my review will likely show up in two places. The new edition is twice the size of the old one, with more hymns and liturgies, and more musical settings of the Psalms (though not "all" the Psalms as one reviewer mistakenly states; there are multiple versions of standard favorites but many of the Psalms are not represented at all in this collection.) Although the revised edition contains more material, a larger proportion of it seems to be printed in a melody-and-lyrics format which is inconvenient for keyboard accompanists. I refuse to shell out for the overpriced "keyboard edition" so I will just have to work around that. Thankfully most of these songs have chord symbols, so it's possible to "fake" a left-hand accompaniment ... or if you have a guitarist available, even better!
While playing through some of the material in the first edition, I noticed a weird tendency toward "modern" harmonizations. Several traditional hymn tunes have been re-arranged so they sound "off" and discordant to my ears. Some might appreciate the "spicing up" of that old material, but I consider it a distraction and a detriment. Of more interest to me is the wealth of *new* material, both lyrical and musical, which is the bulk of the content of both books. They're great as a supplement to the old hymnal, but they contain enough variety of worship material to make them useful as a primary sourcebook if necessary. Though they originate from a Methodist setting, they are non-denominational.

This is good for anyone taking a Chemistry course or weak in any areas like equations. It's a trifold laminate that stays folded up nicely in my 3 ring binder. I found it easier to search then my book. There is a few paragraphs for each headline or a few formulas or a quick step by step guide. The first cover page is really basic and may be misleading in that way. I think one could mistakenly think it is either easy enough for them to understand or not comprehensive enough to help with the chem that you are taking, but I would urge you to check out the other pages. I think it is quite useful for any chem. It covers different stuff then the laminate that just says Chemistry from Quickstudy and I have found reason to have both. I also recommend the Advanced Periodic table from Quickstudy

Not the Chemistry information really needed. Only used the first two pages and then the rest of the information was kind of superfluous. Not sure I would purchase a product like this again. I took better notes and made better study guides myself.
