About the Author

Dr. Robert E. O'Neill is the coordinator of the Mild/Moderate Disabilities Program at the University of Utah, and also teaches courses in Severe Disabilities and master’s and doctoral program courses. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California at Santa Barbara, after which he was a member of the faculty at the University of Oregon for nine years prior to coming to the University of Utah. Dr. O'Neill's recent work has focused on strategies for supporting persons exhibiting severe problem behaviors in a variety of community settings, including homes, classrooms, and work sites. His current work is concerned with the areas of functional assessment, teaching communication skills as alternatives to problem behaviors, school-wide behavioral support, and gender issues in emotional/behavioral disorders. Dr. O'Neill has received over half a million dollars in federal grant support for his research, development, and personnel preparation activities. He has published a number of articles, books, and book chapters, and has done presentations at a variety of state, national, and international conferences. His work has appeared in Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, Journal of the Association for Persons with Severe Handicaps, Education and Treatment of Children, Journal of Developmental and Physical Disabilities, Journal of Special Education, Remedial and Special Education and Journal of Positive Behavioral Support.

John McDonnell (Ph.D.) is a Professor in the Department of Special Education and Associate Dean for Faculty Research Support in the College of Education at the University of Utah. His research interests include curriculum and instruction, secondary/transition programs for students with severe disabilities, and inclusive education. Dr. McDonnell has published several textbooks including Successful Transition Programs:� Pathways for Students with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage Publishing (2010) and An Introduction to Persons with Severe Disabilities: Social and Educational Issues (2nd Edition). Boston: Allyn & Bacon, Inc. (2003). He is an avid fly fisherman and loves camping, hiking, and exploring the wilds of Utah and the intermountain area.

Dr. Felix F. Billingsley is a University of Washington Emeritus Professor. During his years with the College of Education's Area of Special Education, Dr. Billingsley taught courses in instructional methods for students with severe disabilities and in single-case research methods. He also published widely on those topics. When he is not playing blues on acoustic or electric guitar, he enjoys sailing and otherwise traveling with his wife, Patti, particularly in Mexico.

Pericles was one of the most popular plays of its time, and it has regained much of that popularity today. In a wide-ranging introduction, Roger Warren draws on his experience of the play in rehearsal and performance to explore the reasons for this enduring popularity. Unfortunately Pericles survives only in a corrupt text, the Quarto of 1609, in which many passages are nonsensical and others appear to be missing altogether. Earlier editions have merely cleaned-up the Quarto, but this edition offers a conjectural reconstruction of what the original play might have been like. It draws upon George Wilkin's The Painful Adventures of Pericles (1608) to emend some of the errors and missing material. It does so in the belief that the play is a collaboration between Shakespeare and Wilkins. The entire Quarto text is reprinted in an appendix, together with the passages from Wilkin's narrative that have particularly contributed to the reconstruction, so that readers can see for themselves how the reconstruction has been made.

Unappreciated play

It’s generally accepted that "Pericles" is not entirely by Shakespeare’s hand, that he had little to do with the crude construction of the early passages of the story, a seafaring tale of stormy exile that takes its hero to one exotic Mediterranean or Aegean port after another. In fact, Shakespeare’s stamp becomes apparent spottily in the early portions of the play and then powerfully in the latter stages. In the climactic reunion scene, when Pericles, depleted by grief, discovers the child he thought was lost to him, the play records one of the most surefire, heart-pounding emotional moments in the entire canon.

"Pericles" employs plot devices that show up in other of Shakespeare’s tragicomedies, including "The Winter’s Tale", "Measure for Measure", and "The Merchant of Venice". But this play reverberates in singular ways, too, particularly in its intense focus on parents and children. The hero is a guest at the courts of kings whose relationships to their daughters are depraved, as in the case of the incestuous Antiochus; and of insanely jealous queens like Dionyza, who order the deaths of girls perceived as threats to their own daughters. More admirable paternal figures materialize, too, as at the court of Pentapolis, where benevolent King Simonides steers his daughter Thaisa into Pericles’s princely arms. And of course, it is the enduring bond between Marina and her parents, severed by fate, that holds the whole play together.

For Those of Us Who CHOOSE to Read Shakespeare

The Oxford Shakespeares are, I think, an excellent first choice for non-academic readers such as myself. The introduction is helpful, readable and - most importantly for those of us who are actually reading for pleasure - actually adds to one's enjoyment of the play.

Tone of footnotes and introduction is, thankfully, never of awful dumbing-down that besets the Macmillan current editions,

References are all on the page rather than collected at the back of the book,

Paper is of a high quality,

Binding is solid,

Typeface is clear and elegant.

Not so terrific!

I've read 26 of Shakespeare's plays, and this one is not so terrific. Turns out that George Wilkins, a ne'er do well friend of the Bard wrote almost all of the play, but Shakespeare did collaborate with him...just how much I still don't know...even the editor doesn't definitively say. The story is fantastical and with an over-the-top story. The only reason for my reading the play is the Shakespeare Theater's performance of it next year. Since I'm hard of hearing, I need to read the plays before I see them, so I'm able to follow the dialogue and story line. If you don't have to read this play, don't.

Excellent book!

I bought this for my 12 year old son, who is very gifted when it comes to origami. He loves it and has done several of the projects, including the "number" pop-ups for birthdays. He has seen a lot of books on origami and says this one has great instructions and that the author has quite the sense of humour. It is not a beginner's book, for the record.

Since I teach Pop-ups as part of my Geometry Course, and love origami this book was quite a find! Jeremy Shafer was is usual creative self, with models and humor mixed together. Most models require specialized paper, but that would also be normal for cards anyway. His technique of first teaching the figure that will pop-up and then the card, is really interesting, He has a list of his U-tube tutorials in the back, so I plan to find some fun viewing time in the next few days. Oh, I should note I feel the cards range from low intermediate to complex, but there is also simple models mixed in.

About the Author

Dwayne A. Williams has been a practicing physician assistant since 2002, after graduating from the Long Island University physician assistant program with honors. A member of the Physician Assistant Honor Society Pi Alpha, Williams is the director of didactic education at Long Island University and an adjunct professor for the Weill Cornell Medical College’s physician assistant program. He also teaches Physical Assistant National Certification Exam review courses and is a clinical preceptor for the Long Island University program.

Isaak N. Yakubov graduated from the Long Island University physician assistant program with a master’s, and he has practiced as a physician assistant since 2014. He teaches at Long Island University as an adjunct for the School of Health Professions and is a clinical preceptor for students from the York, NYIT, and Wagner College physician assistant programs.

A Pleasant Surprise!

My parents bought me this book for Christmas because they saw the author's name on another book that I had been reading on a visit, and because all the books on my Amazon witness seemed to lean into a world they didn't want to encourage (it was a lot of queer theory and Marxist stuff; not what gets evangelical parents excited). It's a book about TV; who wouldn't want that!

Well, generally me. I spent the better part of my undergrad attending and contributing to the meetings of a certain association that studies both popular and American culture, and by the end of undergrad had become increasingly frustrated with the lack of honest rigor to almost all of the analysis out there. At a certain point, I just became totally disinterested in analysis of popular culture; even the most respected academics I encountered seemed to simply engage in a kind of smart-sounding fandom.

I say all this simply to highlight the fact that what Kotsko has written here is far from that. In fact, if one reads this book, one might find that what seemed lightweight due to its subject matter and avoidance of unnecessary jargon sneaks in a both cogent and rigorous analysis of human sociality and possibilities for political act.

Anyway, just read it.

Indispensable and insightful cultural criticism

Despite the bounty of the Internet, it's still hard to come by thoughtful and enjoyable criticism of pop culture at book length. Most of the really heavy hitters right about music -- consider Greil Marcus's books -- but there's precious little when it comes to either comedy or television. This book (and its follow-up Why We Like Sociopaths) is among the best in class -- like the best long essays, it builds an argument slowly, carefully and -- crucially -- enjoyably, and after a few chapters in, you've not only got a whole new way of looking at the comedy of the past ten years but you also understand a fair bit of Heidegger.

Green Smoothies get rid of junk food cravings!!!

What a wonderful book! For the past 20 years I've been on a quest to eat more natural foods,and my health improved drastically. But I still suffered from junk food cravings...until I discovered Green for Life!

Following Victoria's advice, I added lots of GREENS to my fruit smoothies, and the first day I did so MY FOOD CRAVINGS STOPPED. Bang. Just vanished. Just like my brain's "cravings switch" was flipped to the OFF position. Apparently my body had been craving minerals all those years, and once I started eating GREENS the cravings stopped. And I'm finally trimming down!

Victoria's research in this area is much needed, and much appreciated. I especially love the chapter on the chimpanzees and their daily eating habits.

My wife and I participated in one of Victoria's Green for Life teleconferences, and we loved it. She speaks from her heart, is really a nice lady, and this was one of the best conferences ever. We love Victoria! And we sure love the changes that are happening in our bodies!

The way to healthy living

I used to do a lot of juicing in the past but it is very time consuming and really messy. My problem is over since I got Green for Life. Making smoothies is a great alternative to juicing. It is much faster, less messy, and you also get some fiber in addition to juice. In addition to great recipes for making smoothies the book is also a good source of information about proper nutrition, the importance of hydrochloric acid in the stomach and much more. Get this book!! Another great volume that you may not miss is Can We Live 150. These two books together make a perfect gift of showing the way to healthy living just for anyone.

Great introduction to blending, but should be taken with a grain of salt

I bought this book based on the large number of positive reviews and read it with an open mind, but also some skepticism. I wanted to boost my energy level as well as cut down on meat consumption, but was wary of fad diets and radical lifestyle changes. I was already exercising regularly (3-4x a week), so weight loss wasn't a concern. I was just tired of feeling lethargic all the time and wanted to try a new way to stop being so lifeless.

Thankfully, Boutenko promotes healthy living, not gimmicky diets or fad lifestyles. I gave the book an earnest effort, and within 2 weeks of regular and frequent blending (4 or more smoothies a day), I began to notice a big change in the way my body reacted. I was surprised to see myself growing very sleepy around 11pm and was wide awake by 7, all without a need for an alarm clock. My body became more in tune with the circadian rhythm and day/night cycles whereas previously, I stayed up half the night and didn't wake until past noon. As many others have reported, my craving for meat and junk food sharply declined. After drinking 2 or 3 glasses of smoothies/veggie juice blends in the evening, I didn't have much interest (or room) for much else.

My initial 5 or 6 pitchers were sometimes downright disgusting, but after I got used to the juice blends and varying the ingredients (adding some fruits or store-bought orange juice), I came to like them a lot and looked forward to a tall cold glass of green goo whenever I felt hungry. Particularly effective energy-boosters are dark leafy greens like kale and Chinese mustard greens (Brassica rapa).

Prior to reading "Green for Life", I was juicing. I always felt guilty throwing away all that vegetable and fruit pulp and just drinking the juice, and Boutenko made me realize why. I was discarding all the good stuff, like valuable nutrients, enzymes, and fiber. I had tried to use the pulp in soup, but it didn't taste very good. Juicing also left a big mess to clean up (mesh screen, pulp bucket, juicer walls), and I hadn't even thought to blend. So, now I blend, and keep 100% of the benefits and all the cleaning that's required is rinsing out the pitcher of my blender. Another bonus is that vegetables and fruit are a lot cheaper than meat, so the savings add up. $5 can buy a week's worth of juicing ingredients. In the supermarket, I began to walk right by the meat section without second thoughts, even when there were some great sales. Lower meat consumption is also better for the planet because of how wasteful meat production is.

"Green for Life" is a good starting point to a greener, healthier lifestyle, and I highly recommend it. I do have to take some of what Boutenko says with a grain of salt though. She seems to claim blending as a panacea which solves almost any ailment or condition. Otherwise, I have no doubts as to the health benefits of regular blending. I fell off the wagon for the last 3 months because of work and definitely feel the difference. I'm very tired again during the day, so I've restarted my blending routine. Getting more vegetables into your diet and eating less meat is never a bad thing.
