John Sherry currently works at a research and development lab in Hillsboro, Oregon, where he studies the relationship between people and technology.

Amazingly accurate and insightful

Dr. Sherry's unique humor and his insighful wit made this book a pleasure to read. It's obvious that Dr. Sherry is a man of values, courage, and spontaneity. I applaud Dr. Sherry for his efforts in really bringing to light the activism portrayed in the chronicle. While Sherry's other works were "farcicle," this one has all the makings of a gem.
My only concern is that this book is repetitive and obligatory at times. Dr. Sherry, you might want to be aware of this in future publications.

Compelling and beautiful storytelling

This is a beautifully crafted personal account of the early years of the Navajo environmental justice organization Dine CARE (Citizens Against Ruining our Environment), which has worked for more sustainable forestry practices, protested the siting of toxic waste dumps near native communities, and fought for restitution for Navajo uranium miners. The author demonstrates an admirable awareness of the feelings and motivations of the community and individuals he is describing, while remaining conscious of the limitations inherent in his perspective as a white outsider.

"Land, Wind, & Hard Words" interweaves the narrative of how members of this community came together to found Dine CARE (including descriptions of some of their early struggles against government and industries) with excerpts of Navajo legends and more academic commentary on topics such as the disconnect between such grassroots groups and the fundraising system that claims to want to support them.

Anyone interested in the environmental justice movement will find this book a rich source of information on its potential and challenges. Anyone interested in native issues, Navajo history, or the Southwest in general, will find it a compelling story. I encourage everyone to buy this book - all royalties go to support the ongoing work of Dine CARE.

About the Author

Dr. Shau-Tarng (S.-T.) Lee received his PhD from Stevens Institute of Technology and joined Sealed Air Corp. in foam research, foam product/process, and technology development as a development engineer, a research and development director, and currently a senior research fellow. He has over 100 publications, including 28 patents. Dr. Lee was elected an SPE Fellow in 2001 and was inducted into Sealed Air’s inventor Hall of Fame in 2003. He has authored and edited five foam books published by Technomic and CRC Press. At present, Dr. Lee serves as the Polymeric Foams book series editor for CRC Press, a coeditor-in-chief for the Journal of Cellular Plastics, and the principal editor for Foam Update.

Terrible

I am currently taking a summer course with this book. The examples that the book gives are the simplest examples, then half way through the exercises they get into more complicated problems that they have no examples for. They change the entire format of the problems so it really throws you a curve ball. My entire class agrees that this book does not give you the necessary examples to complete the exercises in the book. Maybe so you will go online and buy a subscription for the MyMathLab? If your professor/teacher has chosen to use this book...good luck and you will be spending alot of time in tutoring or online trying to figure things out!!

This book was an excellent helper for my Algebra class I took for Summer 2009.... Too bad I was too much of an idiot, and therefore needs to repeat the class again. Not the book's fault, I assure you.

Only bad thing about this is that, you will need to purchase a $70 access code from the website to get access to the online requirement for the class I took (some form of coursecompass, which gives you reviews, online quizzes, online tutors and such). The book I purchased did not come with this code.

Book is oK, but you need the access code ( wont get if used ) and therefore have to spend $78 ****** dollars for some stupid letters. what a total rip! You think you're saving with getting a cheap used book at $30 when the new price is $120-160, and feel good, then the teacher mentions..."oh yeah, by the way..." wish he told us before hand about the access code stuff. What a rip, what a money making book. $78 more to spend for a stupid code. RIP-OFF!

Exhaustive (exhausting)

The origins of Osiris are surprisingly murky. His name appeared for the first time in the late Old Kingdom, and within a century he became the most important of Egypt's afterlife gods; the Pyramid Texts refer to him constantly. The mystery surrounding Osiris has spawned all kinds of speculative theories in the scholarly community, sometimes pretty far-fetched.

In this reasonable-sized but very dense book, an expansion of his 1966 work The Origins of Osiris, Griffiths examines all the aspects of Osiris's early character, looking mostly at evidence from the Old and Middle Kingdoms. He addresses seemingly every origin theory that was raised in the century before he wrote, and he delves into such academic minutiae that when I first read partway through the book I wasn't sure what he was arguing for. By the time he's done taking apart the other theories, though, his point becomes clear. Rather than being a mythologized version of a real king, or a god of agriculture who was tied to death and rebirth, Osiris was originally a god of the underworld, perhaps one with a forbidding and ominous reputation. The king was believed to become one with Osiris upon entering the afterlife, ruling the world of the dead as he had once ruled the world of the living. The influence of this idea softened and broadened Osiris's character in the late Old and Middle Kingdoms, so that he became the mythical king and god of rebirth that we're familiar with from overviews of Egyptian religion and myth. The result is a very thorough, but sometimes very tedious, examination of the early evidence about Osiris. Because the book obviously isn't aimed at a popular audience, I value its thoroughness more than I mark it down for its tedium.

Some Egyptologists today, even Richard Wilkinson in The Complete Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt, still say that Osiris began as a god of vegetation or fertility. I'm not sure on what grounds they say that; without counter-evidence, Griffiths seems pretty convincing to me. Other authors have built on Griffiths' thesis while modifying parts of it, such as Harold M. Hays in "The Death of the Democratisation of the Afterlife" (in Old Kingdom, New Perspectives) and Racheli Shalomi-Hen in The Writing of Gods. They show a still hazy, but interesting, picture of how Osiris attained his exalted position in Egyptian theology.

Educational, entertaining, and an overall great read

I ordered this book to read for one of my Ethics classes. I was worried about so much assigned reading to complete in one week, but it turned out to be a book that you just can't put down.

It still amazes me that this is a woman's real life story, the story of her family, and how they have impacted science and anyone who works or benefits from the use of cellular research. That means just about every single person is connected to Henrietta in one way or another.

This was a great book that I'm so glad I read. I learned a lot and it kept me entertained and fascinated for days. It will really change your perspective and make you appreciate this woman's contribution to our scientific and health fields.

My Immortal Gratitude to Henrietta Lacks

I was so moved by this book. Henrietta's story, the agonizing decisions and pains Henrietta was forced to endure, the incredible medical advancements she enabled, the risks Henrietta's family took to help Ms. Skloot to tell the story, the author's careful consideration for Henrietta's family--I cannot overstate what an impact all of this made on me. I am not medical professional--just a mom of and advocate for medically fragile kiddos--but in my 40 years of life I had never heard of Henrietta Lacks. A friend rec'd this book to me last month, and once I started reading I couldn't stop. I applaud Ms. Skloot for her compassion for the Lacks family and her determination to share their story as completely as possible. They are an imperfect but beautiful family, and I am grateful to have gotten to "know" them through this book.

This is also a fascinating snapshot of the state of ethics and understandable lack of informed consent in our country in 1951. The author does a very good job of explaining how and why Drs. Gey & Jones made the decisions they made when it came to their patient, Henrietta, while also illustrating the ethical implications of their decisions, how much we've learned since then, and exactly why we've changed our standards and practices to be fair and transparent to patients, their families, and to the public. Chapter 13 "The HeLa Factory" resonated with me in particular--so much logic, reason, common sense, and public health operations/obligations everywhere, but the dehumanization of Henrietta was painful to watch.

I am excited to report that my real life doctors know of HeLa! I was so thrilled when they acknowledged they knew what I was talking about! But they usually do not know WHO I am talking about. I find Henrietta's story, as told by Ms. Skloot and Deborah, so overwhelming, tragic, and exciting that I talk to all of our doctors about her! They all seem to know HeLa (!!!), but nobody seems to know Henrietta. I am always excited to share what I know of her story and am so thankful this book was written. Thank you to Ms. Skloot and the Lacks family for persevering in this endeavor. We all already benefit from Henrietta's contribution, unknowingly, but now we can benefit from the lessons learned from the stories of her and her family, and have the correct names and faces in mind when we feel gratitude for even the littlest advancements in medicine. If I could give all of you hugs right now, I sure would.

I am not a lover of nonfiction books but this one kept me coming back to see if the Lacks family would ever be told what was going on with Henrietta's cells.

About the Author
Richard M. Felder is Hoechst Celanses Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at North Carolina State University. He has authored or coauthored over 200 papers on chemical process engineering and engineering education and presented hundreds of seminars, workshops, and short courses in both categories to industrial and research institutions and universities throughout the United States and abroad. Since 1991 he has co-directed the National Effective Teaching Institute Under the auspices of the Ameican Society for Engineering Education. Ronald W. Rousseau Hoechst the Cecil J. "Pete" Silas Endowed chair and also chairs the School of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. In addition to his Commitment to undergraduate education, he has been an active researcher in the field of separation science and technology, focusing his attention on crystallization science and technology among other topics. He is a Fellow of both AIChE and the American Association for the Advancement of Science and has served as chair of the Council for Chemical Research, Member of the Board of Directors of AIChE, and chair of the AIChE publication Committee.

Drs. Felder and Rousseau have won numerous awards for their contributions to engineering research and education, and were recipients of the 2002 Warren K. Lewis Award for Contributions to Chemical Engineering Education from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

From an Industrial Practitioner of Process Measurement & Control

This book is an excellent reference on Chemical Processes Principles and Calculations for any engineer or practitioner working in the process industries. I am an Electronic Engineer, but I have been working for the last 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. As a result I have been involved with Chemical Engineering issues in a day to day basic.

I have found this book to be an ideal self-study guide. The book includes a A CD-ROM that provides an active learning environment. If a non Chemical Engineer can learn Chemical Engineering Principles from this book, I guarantee that any Chemical Engineering student or practitioner will find this readable textbook very useful.

Another great reference is David Himmelblau's Book "Basic Principles and Calculations in Chemical Engineering"

A Comprehensive Guide for the Beginning Chemical Engineer

Felder & Rousseau's "Elementary Principles of Chemical Processes" is the go-to resource for beginner chemical engineers for good reasons: the book is organized in a straightforward manner and explains concepts in a detailed but not overbearing way. Sufficient example problems and solutions are also given throughout each chapter to help the reader understand the application of the concepts covered.

This text is an excellent introduction and overview to chemical process engineering design and operation.

Another excellent fan manga

Another excellent fan manga! :) This book includes a battle during which Vegeta must give it everything he's got to stand up against the new and improved 4-star dragon! But will his new found power as a SSJ5 even be enough?? Find out TUH-DAY!! Hahaha But seriously, This is just another great addition to this phenomenal version of the AF series. My compliments go out to everyone who has been making the U.S. release of this manga series a reality.
