too many mistakes, outdated material

This book is teeming with mistakes. Singleton implementations are broken(the current idiom for singleton is enum singleton, static class holder(described in this book) is an idiom for safe publication only, but it does not work for singleton because there can be several classloaders in JVM) - double checked locking in this book misses volatile keyword, which is crucial. Nevertheless, the book confirms that implementation does not work and says that "the problem was reportedly fixed in Java 5". Guys, I've bought this book for Java 7 certification, of course it should reflect changes made in Java 5.

The authors also do not distinguish the difference between widening of primitive types and upcasting of classes.

The sum() method on page 166 creates n Double object wrappers, instead of using primitive double variable etc. and so on.

This book also contains many groundless optimization tips, for example it states that final classes in Java are more efficient, because "the method calls are resolved in compiler time" . That is wrong for Hotspot JVM, because it's smart enough to apply analogous optimization looking whether the method is effectively overriden in subclass or not - it's done during the classloading and has nothing to do with final keyword.
You should not justify twisting your code only by a hypothesis that there may exist some JVM where some specific optimization *may* work.

A good review but has errors

I used this book to study for the OCPJP Java 1.7 exam. It prepared me. I used Mock Exam 1 as an open book test. Good thing I did it as open-book because several answers were wrong. In particular this : Question 83 asks you to choose 1 correct answer from 4 possible code snippets. The problem is that two of them are right. The answer book says "Options b) and c) uses the finally block, which is not applicable with try-with-resource." Which is incorrect. The FINALLY clause is perfectly acceptable with try-with-resource. Some of the questions also had typographical, syntax, and grammar errors, which make it seem as if they rushed to press without bug-proofing the exams.

Otherwise, this was a good study aid. It seems comprehensive.

Good Preparation- I passed on the first try

I bought the Kindle version. It's only like $20 or so. I'm studying for both the OCA and the OCP at the same time. I have my OCA scheduled in a few days, and I'll schedule my OCP later. I've noticed that this helps me with my OCP preparation as well as my OCA. I recommend it, as well as reading the online Oracle Java learning trails, and the enthuware.com mock exams. These three resources will help with OCP. I have an excellent book for the OCA, which of course paired with enthuware.com mock exams and the learning trails.

Update- I completed this book the first time. It's like 650 pages. I will re-read it and then take the enthuware mock exams I bought (which they updated for me recently). I like the book, I like the writing style, I believe in the content, and it's nice to have somebody gather this information for me in a way that helps me target the exam. I'll update this when I get results on my exam. My recommendation is to read it twice, and I'm following my own recommendation. 650 pages is a lot of information to take in.

Update- After reading this book twice, taking and reviewing both included exams, reading the online Oracle.com Javadocs for the OCP JP SE 7 certification, getting a wee bit of practical experience, and taking and reviewing all 5+1 associated Enthuware exams, I passed the 804 exam on my first try. I got a 70%, where 65% is a passing score. This book was an important introductory step toward getting this certification. The study process up to today (June 9 2014 pass) took me 6 months of part-time study.

I recommend studying this book as a part of the above steps to prepare for the 804 exam.

Project-based instruction

Microprogramming has has traditionally been thought of as an implementation technology for standard processors' instruction sets. It simplifies the control structure for assembly level instructions, such as floating point operations or block moves, that might have dozens of corner cases. As such, microcoded 'firmware' operates at a level below traditional software but above hardware design. It eliminates the complexities of state machine design, and re-design when bugs need fixing or when new features are needed.

This book gives first-hand experience in using microcode to implement a simple instruction set. The student reader starts by building a data path from 7400-family logic (this dates from 1991 after all, a dozen or more Moore generations ago). Then, using a simple sequencer of the authors' design, the student writes the microcode that steps the hardware, cycle by cycle, through instruction fetch, decoding, and execution. A series of upgrades gradually adds complexity to the first generation of the student project, until the final version uses the venerable 2910 sequencer and MSI ALU chip as core logic elements.

Although this clearly demonstrates microcoding as a complement to traditional logic implementation, it does little to point the way toward more general use of the technique. It stays close to the stereotype of microcode as an instruction set implementation technology only, instead of extending it to complex and adaptable sequencing of arbitrary digital systems. It also misses the opportunity to customize a sequencer to a specific application. Given 1980s technology (on which this book is based), use of off-the-shelf components made sense. Today, though, complex logic very nearly equates to FPGAs, at least for development. Designers of complex systems should consider microcode as a way to make the control plane more regular and adaptable, and should have the option of creating whatever sequencing primitives make sense for their application.

This book can still inspire logic designers seeking to bring microcoded control back from obscurity. I recommend this only for skilled logic designers, however, since the good ideas here tend to hide behind archaic technology, stereotyped usage, and microinstructions already designed by the authors.

Robert Rauschenberg is one of the most important visual artists of the second half of the twentieth century. In Random Order, Branden Joseph examines Rauschenberg's work in the context of the American neo-avant-garde. One of the foundations of his study is Rauschenberg's professional relationship with experimental composer John Cage. From the moment of their encounter at Black Mountain College in 1952, Joseph argues, Rauschenberg and Cage initiated a new avant-garde project, one that approached the idea of difference not in terms of negation but as a positive force. Claiming that Rauschenberg's work cannot be understood solely from the standpoint of the Frankfurt School -- whose theories have dominated discussions of avant-garde and neo-avant-garde aesthetics -- Joseph turns to the theoretical positions of Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida. Rauschenberg's neo-avant-garde was not a simple repetition of earlier avant-garde movements, Joseph shows, but a series of practices that opposed the rise of postwar spectacle, commodification, and mass conformity.

Beginning with the White Paintings, Joseph examines Rauschenberg's artistic development from 1951 to 1971. He looks at the black paintings, Red Paintings, Elemental Paintings and Elemental Sculptures, Combines and Combine paintings, transfer drawings and silkscreens, performances, and explorations in art and technology. Indispensable

This study of Rauschenberg will doubtless make itself pretty much indispensable in the literature on the artist. It's a brilliant study- Joseph is in command of the literature on the topic, demonstrates a great deal of theoretical sophistication, as well as showing a lot of sensitivity to the works and their context.

Joseph's contention is to explore Rauschenberg's work in relation to the Neo-avant-garde, seeking to show that his work (along with his colleague John Cage) was neither a farcical repetition of 1920s Dada (ie jaded attempts to "shock" the viewer), nor was it an ironic casting-off of the avant-garde project in favour of a capitulation to commodity capitalism (ie through his pop culture references and so on). Instead, Joseph argues- convincingly- that Rauschenberg (and Cage) sought to escape the tyranny of the self- the "ego" of Absract Expressionism, in order to open up perception to differentiation and multiplicity- an attempt to open up a space beyond the totalised structures of late capitalism. (Joseph's concerns give away his being an ex-student of Benjamin Buchloh- hence these particularly Frankfurt School concerns). So for Joseph, Rauschenberg's White Paintings, or his Tire Print with John Cage, were not simply juvenile pranks, nor farcical, worn-out shock tactics, but serious attempts to disclocate habitual modes of perception and cognition- in this way, Rauschenberg both differs from, and continues the avant-garde project of political change.

Joseph makes a good case- in particular, his first chapter, on Rauschenberg and Cage, where he examines their interest in temporality and flux in relation to the ideas of Bergson, is quite brilliant. But the level of discussion is sustained throughout- it's a compelling and fascinating read which will doubtless provoke a great deal of thought.

As you would expect from the MIT Press, its not a study for the lay reader- the usual phalanx of thinkers are brought to bear- Foucault, Deleuze, Bataille and the like- although Joseph draws on them judiciously, without detracting from the focus of his study. In fact its very readable indeed- Joseph hasn't succumbed (yet) to the puffed-up rhetorical excesses of some of his October colleagues.

Very well written and an incredible message for kids to hear. So glad they made this Young Reader version.

My 8-year old son reads a lot of the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" books and that sort of "book" :/, so it was such a breath of fresh air to introduce him to a book that is SO WELL WRITTEN, and has such a great message of perseverance and overcoming obstacles. The Audience Guide says 4th-7th grade, but I think even younger grades might be ok, especially if parents read it with, or to, their 1st-4th grader, as the subject matter in parts can be a little emotional, and a few concepts would be helpful to pause and talk about. (I wanted to pause and talk about ALL the parts!!) The way the book jumps from Joe's childhood to adulthood every-other chapter might be confusing at first if kids aren't familiar with that literary device. One thing that would have helped this confusion is if the book designer/publisher made the little icon of the rowers under the chapter # (which is ALWAYS the same) different for the chapters that have to do with his youth. For example, only use that crew/boat icon on the chapters about the UW team, but for the other chapters use a different icon/illustration that has to do with his childhood to help guide the reader when there's a time switch.

I have not read the original version, but plan to because this was such a compelling and captivating story. I hope they make a movie out of it, too.

An exciting piece of history brought to life for a young adult audience

Although I haven't read the full version of this inspiring true story and biography, I didn't feel like I missed anything in this young adult (condensed) version of the book. It has all the drama of excitingly described boat races, as well as the pathos of a difficult childhood.

I grew up about a mile from the Montlake Cut and the Husky Boathouse, where many of the events in this book took place (although my childhood was 20 years later). And I've been to, or near, many of the locations described here, and I found them to be true to the geography and history I know. I have a minor quibble with saying the boathouse is on Lake Washington, when locals would say it's on Union Bay (which is connected to Lake Washington). Also the area where Joe Rantz goes out in a canoe with is fianc�e is Foster Slough, which is not named specifically.

I will be recommending this book to the teachers of Washington State history at the school where I am the librarian, as so many aspects of our state history are brought up in this saga: a childhood in various locales around the state, farming, logging, mining, the creation and building of the Grand Coulee Dam, and of course the development of a competitive rowing crew that became the first entry from Washington State in the Olympics, not to mention that they won, much to excitement of our whole state back (and much of the nation) in 1936!

A wonderful book for people of all ages

A wonderful book for people of all ages. An easier read for the younger set; however, all of the important messages are still included. It relays the hopes and dreams of those who came from a somewhat common upbringing to the World Stage of sports.

My grandma got me this cookbook like 40yrs ago. I made the Big Bad Wolf Brownies for everyone and They Loved them... I lost my book 7yrs ago with all my personal belongings(whole life worth of pictures-collectables-clothes-jewelry-everything in the house) It broke my heart to know someone has my stuff and I thought I would Never have the Big Bad Wolf Brownies ever again... A confusing but cute romance.

Well colour me surprised when Goodreads has users listing this as a Young Adult novel. Cause I wouldn't really define it as that. There is definitely some sexual content in here. A lot. But, there is some young love too, so, naturally I was hooked. So I did really like the characters and the story line. Basically for her parents to conceive they needed the help of the Fae and in return she would wed a fae prince. Pretty cool. I sort of had a feeling I was getting into something along the lines of the Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. Then things got a little...heated. Anyhow I still really liked the characters and the story line. But, to say that this book wasn't a little confusing would be a lie. In the fae world time passes differently for humans and so for Etta months go by when she thinks its only days. So when Farron goes from what seems to be hating Etta to being a nice guy it became pretty confusing. And, sadly things were not properly explained. Which made it even more confusing. Other than that I really enjoyed the book. I just felt like some of my questions went un-answered, especially the ones about the dramatic changes in some of the characters.
Good:
Etta--she seems nieve, but overall a pretty cool character.
Farron--definitely grows on you
Bad:
Some confusion with the story lines.
Overall (Writing style, story line, and general):
Overall the novel was a bit confusing in the beginning and I felt like it could have been made into a longer novel to simply explain those circumstances. Overall though, I still rather enjoyed the novella and really did like the characters and their budding romance. I liked learning about the world of the fae, but felt that it just could have been made into a full length novel to really get a good feel for the novel.

Cute, Easy Read

I generally like to read books that are an easy read, without undue angst, and entertaining. This book meets all of those criteria. If you are looking for a deep and meaningful story, this is not the book for you. If you like light romance and stories about fae, then I recommend it for you. For those that are looking for more of an innocent romantic tale, there are some steamy scenes in the book, but they don't take it over and they aren't over the top.

So much conceptual potential, but lacking editorial refinement...

Etta Cooper learned at a young age that her fate was not her own to decide. Promised to a faerie prince she must marry or break the oath her parents made and let them suffer for it. Taken to Faeryland she grows fond of her would-be-husband, the eldest Fae Prince Bronn, but when he casts her aside she finds herself betrothed to the human hating prince Farron instead. Though elegant, Farron's cold air of superiority does nothing to warm Etta's sad heart. As the pair grow to know one another, however, she discovers there's much more to the broodish Fae Prince than she was lead to believe.

Conceptually, TO WED A FAE PRINCE had so much promise. A teenaged girl who find out she has to leave the only world she's ever known to be married to a stranger. Having that stranger cast her aside, leaving her bound to someone she likes even less and knows hates her. Misunderstandings and deceit that create tension and conflict to evolve the romantic plot. Alas, poor editing and a lack of refinement keep this fae romance from being fully enjoyable.

Etta is very immature and her first person narrative makes love scenes feel dirty, and not in a good way. Though technically Etta is only 16, Vervain uses the Fae world and her being human to explain away an aging process to make her 'adult' that I could not personally excuse enough to not find the graphic sex inappropriate. Farron seems a bit cookie-cutter and though not completely unlikable, he's not well fleshed out enough to be that interesting. As a romance, TO WED A FAE PRINCE, is likely to disappoint mature romance readers with weak use of the formula the genre is traditionally built around. For the New Adult audience I think this one will be more pleasing with the younger characters and very detailed love scenes.

I wish Vervain's editor (if one was utilized) had pointed out that there wasn't any world building before Etta was thrust into Faeryland and that the storyline would have benefited from giving the reader a bit more to work with. Additionally, the wording in the love scenes felt like a child's descriptions of what they think sex is. As an avid romance reader I never want to see the word 'humping' used by a heroine. Aside from those frustrating areas there's a decent story of a hero and heroine breaking down one another's barriers to become friends and lovers. Worth a read for the late-teens aged reader who might not be ready for more erotic fantasy romances but still want some blush-inducing spice to their read.
