Philip F. Esler is Professor of Biblical Criticism at the University of St. Andrews, Scotland. Among his publications are Conflict and Identity in Romans (Fortress Press, 2003), The Early Christian World (editor, 2000), Galatians (1998), The Early Christians and Their Social Worlds (1994).

A much needed volume

This volume is a much needed volume in the social scientific study of the Old Testament. The central, unifying theme in this volume is the use of anthropological, social-psychological, and macro-sociological models and their heuristic use in terms of interpreting Hebrew Bible texts. Having read many socio-historical texts on ancient Israel, few actually utilize anthropology and the other social sciences in a way that social scientists actually would. This volume does just that... Explaining a model and then utilizing that model to see if it is a heuristic tool that works and proves that this method is helpful in Hebrew Bible interpretation.

Creative, insightful essay collection

This is a fascinating collection of essays defending and applying social-scientific perspectives in relation to ancient Israel and Old Testament literature.
Do social science models presuppose fixed social nomologies, or are they heuristically useful and encouraging of adaptation and improvement? In social context, did Abraham's devious lies about Sarah to the pharaoh of Egypt and Abimelech cast doubt on his moral character or did they bring him honor as he acquired wealth from his interactions outside of Mesopotamia while not violating the agonistic value of limited good among kinsfolk? Are ancient Near Eastern treaties/covenants simply another form of patron-client relationships, or are they admitting of a separate theoretical category? Was Jephthah's sacrifice of his daughter one big case of him shooting himself in the foot as a moral lesson, or did it bring clarity to his ambiguous honor status? Was the Levitical system of sacrifice completely successful in eliminating the typical connection of sacrifices with divinatory rituals? Can Joseph Smith illuminate the the dynamics of prophecy in ancient Israel?
