If you drink tap water, you will stop after reading this book

Another classic book on water, this one is much more detailed than Walker's Water Can Undermine Your Health, but just as easy to read. If you are crazy enough to drink tap water, you will stop after reading this book. You should get both books, but if you can only get one, this would be my first choice. BTW, TDS meters, shipped direct from China, are cheap enough on ebay to check the relative quality of your water.

beware older editions + food pyramid

A good introduction into why pure water is so important and what could go wrong when you drink water with pollutants. However they have at least 2 EDITIONS OF THIS BOOK and it seems like I got an older edition from a 3rd party seller.

Also I don't agree with their food guide pyramid. The Transcend Food Pyramid (page 239 of Transcend) is a closer match of how centenarians eat.

So-so

Like many business books, "The Elements of Persuasion" contains pages and pages pages of case studies, many of which appeared to me to be rather weakly linked to the concept of storytelling. By the end, I was skipping over entire sections because the case studies just did not feel relevant. I was left wishing for more original content.

The authors also try to relate many concepts in the book to the elements of fire, earth, water, air, and space. These analogies seemed awkward and unnecessary at times.

Finally...I understand the "passion, hero, antagonist, awareness, transformation" concepts, but I would have liked more concrete, hands-on information on how these concepts can be integrated into corporate sales scenarios (not an unfair comment, as this is really how they are pitching the book).

Cheesy but useful

The good: this book offers a useful, simple methodology to sell using the power of stories; if you know what you sell well, and if you have any sort of passion for what you do, you'll probably already have some of the elements, but it's always good to read someone else's view and have a more complete methodology. It's also a light read.

The not so good: an endless, almost unbearable litany of sappy US centric examples; I don't mean just the people (Warren Buffet! The Marines! Senator so and so!), but also the world view, as revealed by the worshipping of shysters, CEO's and other assorted car sales people: be a winner! Because we all want to be winners! Sell that cereal! Anyone with a more wordly or even just european view will either cringe or laugh... Outside the US few people dream of selling more cereal, and some find the void of such a life unbearable.

Still, not all is lost, because you might have figured out a way to actually like what you do or are looking for something worthy of doing, and in that case you still need a way of selling it, even if selling is not in your blood or the mere fact of thinking about it repulses you: By telling your story in a way your client cares about, the selling becomes more natural. And just as importantly, developing that story might make everyone in your organisation more involved, happier with their work and more productive.

It would be great if someone came out with this same methodology from the perspective of all those who have a sense of professionalism but are looking to apply it to something more interesting than selling that darned cereal / CDO / deodorant.

It's All in The Story

Storytelling is a powerful way to engage people within the sales process. The authors in this book immediately begin in the first chapter help you understand how to construct a powerful story. There are five elements involved in this creation.

1. Passion - the energy of delivery and emotions expressed
2. Hero - provide a point of view and engages the audience
3. Antagonist - obstacles that need to be overcome
4. Awareness - opportunity to learn from story
5. Transformation - the happy ending

Within the passion element, the authors contend that a good story has an element of surprise. This surprise factor helps to spread the story through word of mouth. Modern day examples of heroes cited included: Warren Buffet, Frank Perdue and Colonel Sanders. Then the authors walk the reader through the other four elements.

This book is a great template to help sales professionals craft a compelling story and learn how to leverage storytelling as part of their sales skills allowing them to truly be The Red Jacket in a sea of gray suits

Through analysis of legal records from twenty-two countries between 1790 and 2010, the authors present a history of the rise and fall of racial selection in the Western Hemisphere.


The United States led the way in using legal means to exclude "inferior" ethnic groups. Starting in 1790, Congress began passing nationality and immigration laws that prevented Africans and Asians from becoming citizens, on the grounds that they were inherently incapable of self-government. Similar policies were soon adopted by the self-governing colonies and dominions of the British Empire, eventually spreading across Latin America as well.


Undemocratic regimes in Chile, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Cuba reversed their discriminatory laws in the 1930s and 1940s, decades ahead of the United States and Canada. The conventional claim that racism and democracy are antithetical―because democracy depends on ideals of equality and fairness, which are incompatible with the notion of racial inferiority―cannot explain why liberal democracies were leaders in promoting racist policies and laggards in eliminating them. Ultimately, the authors argue, the changed racial geopolitics of World War II and the Cold War was necessary to convince North American countries to reform their immigration and citizenship laws.

A must read, Culling the Masses is an impressive book that offers a novel historical analysis of the evolution of immigration policy. The book is relevant to contemporary policy debates of immigration and should be read by politicians, scholars, and laypersons interested in issues of immigration and race.

Ground-breaking contribution to comparative immigration scholarship

“Culling the Masses” is a ground-breaking contribution to comparative immigration scholarship. It sheds light on what criteria were used to select immigrants in the entirety of the Americas, from Canada to Argentina, from the US to Cuba and other countries.

The often openly racist policies of exclusion and inclusion of certain immigrants are meticulously researched by the authors, as are the underlying assumptions and value judgments about certain groups, such as Asians, Roma, and others. Their analysis spans more than 200 years, revealing authentic documents from policy-making processes in a large number of countries that are the result of in-depth archival work by the authors.

Ultimately, the insights into processes of norm diffusion and the exploration on the impact of democratic and non-democratic political regimes make this book a must-read for scholars, students, and the interested public who want to learn more about how states learn to select immigrants and what are the limitations of the involved policy choices.

Mobile Digital Tools can dramatically improve your productivity

About a year ago, I attended a workshop by Simon where he convinced me to get rid of paper and only use digital tools on my PC, iPad and iPhone. It has been a wonderful, cathartic experience to get rid of my extensive paper filing system and library and go fully digital. Most importantly, the adoption of digital tools has dramatically improved my productivity. Simon's book has inspired me to renew my efforts on my journey in improving my digital intelligence and productivity by fully embracing and learning the new generation mobile based tools. Simon has provided a compelling, well structured and well written book on why and how I need to go about this endeavour. Only by fully embracing, learning and sensibly applying the right mobile tools will any person in business be agile to adapt to the challenges and opportunities in today's complex and volatile business world.

Food for thought...

Simon Waller's book 'Analogosaurus', provides a compelling take on the importance of moving with the digital times. Whether you're in to 'all things technology' or not, you simply can't deny the logic in this book and Simon makes it easy to get on board the digital transformation bandwagon.

Simon gently walks us through the case for building digital intelligence, employing a mix of logical arguments, interesting stories and easy to grasp metaphors. His passion for the topic is obvious and his writing style clear and organised. And if you read to the very last page you will be treated to his wit and quirky sense of humour!

A great achievement Simon. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us and for providing the gentle prod to stay relevant, enjoy the rewards of digital intelligence and make our digital goals realistic.

Change - Or Go Extinct!

I work in computer software, so this book looked very interesting to me. I find it to be well written (but poorly printed), with a timely message, but somewhat lacking towards the end. It is an enjoyable read for anyone who expects to get along in tomorrow's business world.

This book is a timely warning about how the modern world is going further and further into the digital realm, and how out of touch many people are to where the future is heading. I like the author's style, which is relaxed and very compact - he gets out a lot of information is a short space. I found myself rereading the text sometimes to be sure I got all the information that is packed in here. The first part of the book is really great, detailing the past 20 years and how vital it is to change one's perception and manner of working - or risk being left behind as computers take over the mundane tasks of work. This part is timely and scary.

He then launches into a discussion of how to be different (Relevant, Rewarding, and Realistic, as he labels it). This section is full of interesting ideas, but to my mind none of them are fleshed out sufficiency. It is as if I'm reading a "Reader's Digest" version of the tale - I wanted more details, discussion, and facts. The reader is going to have to do more than just read to implement this stuff - but maybe that is the point, after all! Some of the items may show up in a future book, as the author freely confesses that some information would take volumes to really discuss. Personally, I'd like to read those volumes.

The last part is a glimpse into two possible futures that technology could be leading us into. One is great, the other scary. I suspect the truth is that both futures are going to come to pass, a possibility that the author does not seem to consider.

The author is well read on the subject, and there is a good list of references at the end for continued reading.

The printing has a serious problem - the text is literally faint; the printing should be bolder. When the author does long quotes in italics, the text is nearly unreadable. I hope that a future version uses a darker font for all purposes. This is very important because the book is aimed at the "analogosaurus", i.e., the person currently resisting the digital tide that is engulfing all workers. Those folks are going to read hard copy, not the E-Books!

The author does not have a technical viewpoint - he looks into the world of IT as an outsider. While he understands the issues, I can tell that he is working off of research rather than an in depth understanding of programming and the digital world. Perhaps this is for the better - his target audience is exactly those people who do not understand computing, and are resisting the changes that could revolutionize their working world. But I found it interesting to read because I do understand many of the things that he seems talk about rather than fully understand. I think the book is well written for the target audience, but if you understand IT you will chuckle a few times.

Summary: A timely tale that should be required reading of anyone in business.

Insightful and bold

At Bible College I was introduced to the idea of dispensationalism and the Rapture as ground work for my basic studies. However, a recent challenge to these ideas found me woefully lacking. While researching I came across this study and was immediately captivated as my eyes were opened to the rich bounty of resources William Watson had revealed.

I enjoyed the non-bias manner in which the matter is presented and yet with the strength of the individual Bereans set forth in their individual beliefs gave me additional insights I had not previously considered. My experience has found that authors are more often then not espousing their own bias` and therefore using only material that best promotes the thesis being put forward.

Additional insights brought out in this study would include, but not be limited too, Anti-Christ beliefs through the ages; millennialism; replacement theology and more...

Wonderful book. This absolutely blows apart the theory that J.N. Darby invented Dispensationalism and the Pretrib rapture. All the essential ideas associated with Dispensationalism were being discussed for a couple of centuries before Darby. Though a fully systematized Dispensationalism did not seem to appear before Darby, the significant ideas had been thoroughly discussed. Watson does a wonderful job documenting the richness of Anglican, Puritan, and Separatist thought in 16th and 17th century England, the American Colonies, France and Holland.

Fantastic, groundbreaking, vastly important work!! Watson sheds a new light on the correct origins of many elements of dispensationalism that pre-date John Nelson Darby. The straw-man that Darby invented dispensationalism will disappear in 20 years. Nearly every theology textbook will have to be revised due to Dr. Watson's research. I had the pleasure of hearing him lecture on this topic recently and was impressed. I'm still reading the book, but it is groundbreaking!

learning about other cultures

The stories that the old grandmother tells the young when they need a bed time story are what make cultures continue.
Explaining these stories to children could be hard as
there are American Indian ( native American) stories, Islamic stories,
Chinese and Japanese stories.
But mostly they are just simple tales that are fun to read.
I liked the book and I think it helps people understand
other cultures.

Emil is running after his slum kids, panting in the noonday sun, loosening the high collar of his shirt as he goes.
���� The children urge him on, their voices shrill with agitation.
��� “Not much further, Father Emil!”
��� “Over here, this way!”
��� “Just a little more!”
��� His fear grows with each step. It tastes like rust, feels gritty like dirt in his mouth.
��� The stench from the sea of garbage around them is overpowering. It rained last night, and now that the sun is out, the dump site is steaming. Awful vapors rising lazily with the heat: wet paper and rot and excrement mixing in a soup of odors around them, above them.
��� You’d think by now you would be used to this, he tells himself, but you’re not. One never gets used to this.
��� At last they come to a small space about five feet in diameter, where the garbage has been cleared away to expose the older, compost-like layer beneath.
��� “There.” One of the children points.
��� Even before he looks in the direction indicated by the thin forefinger, he detects it, a new note of putrescence among all the putrescences mingling in the unwholesome air.
��� A small, thin, pale hand protrudes from beneath the garbage.
��� “Mother of God,” he mutters under his breath. He turns to the children. “Quick, get me a long stick.”
��� Three children immediately come forward, offering him the digging sticks they use to poke through the garbage. He takes one and walks grimly toward their discovery.
��� He is about to begin when a flash of concern for the children stabs through the grey, slow-moving haze of fear. He stops, turns around and tells them to leave.
��� “No, Father Emil,” they say, first one voice, then many voices. “We will stay with you,” and in their faces there is a kind of quiet determination and sympathy so grown-up it startles him.
��� Secretly he is glad of the company. He does not repeat the order and returns, face set, to the business at hand.
��� All right. Here we go then.
��� He begins to root through great clumps of garbage, and slowly the thing begins to emerge. He won’t look at it yet—although he already knows what it is—not until he has more or less cleared away the refuse above and around it.
��� When he is done, the body of a child emerges. It is a boy about eight to ten years old, though it is difficult for Emil to tell the age accurately. Even at fourteen or fifteen, most of these kids are small, very small, owing to malnutrition and disease.
��� It is lying face down in the muck and completely naked.
��� The smell of it—now the dominant note in the vile broth of rot smells; it hangs heavy and horrible in the air.
��� Flies like fat, shiny blue-black beads, buzzing around the body insistently.
��� Emil cannot see any marks or wounds on the back or on the back of the head. Afraid to touch the corpse, he slides one end of the stick underneath the body, just beneath the chest, and uses it as a lever to turn the body over. The deadweight almost breaks the stick in two.
��� The sudden silence among the children is odd. In fact, the whole world seems to Emil to have fallen silent. The neighborhood sounds and the sounds of the traffic from the highway have faded to a strange, low rumble in his ears.
��� The front of the child’s body seems to be moving, and it takes the priest a few seconds to comprehend that there are maggots in it, thousands of them. Gaping wounds—no, holes—in the chest and stomach.
��� Emil realizes the heart has been removed, the child eviscerated. The genitals are missing.
��� He looks at the face. Please, God, let the face remind me this used to be a human being. Another few seconds and he realizes the face is gone, as though it has been scraped off, leaving a mess of jellied eyeball and bone protruding here and there through muscle.
��� Hard to make sense of what is missing, what is left.
��� Purple-brown scabs on the child’s knees, probably from an afternoon’s rough play.
��� The spell abruptly broken now, the children running, screaming, from the clearing, leaping goatlike over the garbage in terror.
��� Emil turns, staggering away from the body, and throws up until his stomach feels completely empty. It does not seem enough; he still feels sick, and he forces his throat to constrict several times, to no avail.
��� Through the tears that stream from his eyes, he sees that three of the older children have remained. They come toward him now, wordlessly take him by the hand and lead him out quietly, gently, through the garbage.

The author does a terrific job in covering his subject in a readable and navigable manner. As a non-public health specialist, I found his style very accessible and compelling.
