About the Author

James MacGregor Burns is a Senior Scholar at the Academy of Leadership, University of Maryland, College Park, and Woodrow Wilson Professor Emeritus of Government at Williams College. He has written numerous books, including The Power to Lead (1984), The Vineyard of Liberty (1982), Leadership (1979), Roosevelt. The Soldier of Freedom (1970), The Deadlock of Democracy: Four-Party Politics in America (1963), and Roosevelt: The Lion and the Fox (1956). With his son, Stewart Burns, he wrote A People's Charter: The Pursuit of Rights in America (1991); with Georgia Sorenson, Dead Center: Clinton, Gore, and the Perils of Moderation (2000); and with Susan Dunn, The Three Roosevelts (2001). Burns is a past president of the American Political Science Association and winner of numerous prizes, including a Pulitzer Prize in History.

J.W. Peltason is a leading scholar on the judicial process and public law. He is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of California, Irvine. As past president of the American Council on Education, Peltason has represented higher education before Congress and state legislatures. His writings include Federal Courts in the Political Process (1955), Fifty-Eight Lonely Men: Southern Federal Judges and School Desegration (1961), and with Sue Davis, Understanding the Constitution (2000). Thomas E. Cronin is a leading student of the American presidency, leadership, and policy-making processes. He teaches at and serves as president of Whitman College. Crime in the Streets (1981), Direct Democracy: The Politics of Initiative, Referendum, and Recall (1989), Colorado Politics and Government (1993), and The Paradoxes of the American Presidency (1998). Cronin is a past recipient of the American Political Science Association's Charles E. Merriam Award.

David B. Magleby is nationally recognized for his expertise on direct democracy, voting behavior, and campaign finance. He is Professor of Political Science at Brigham Young University and has taught at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the University of Virginia. His writings include Direct Legislation (1984), The Money Chase: Congressional Campaign Finance Reform (1990), Myth of the Independent Voter (1992), and editor of Outside Money: Soft Money and Issue Advocacy in the 1998 Congressional Elections (2000). He was president of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national political science honor society, and has received numerous teaching awards. In 1996 he was a Fulbright Scholar at Nuffield College, Oxford University.

David M. O'Brien is the Leone Reaves and George W. Spicer Professor at the University of Virginia. He was a Judicial Fellow and Research Associate at the Supreme Court of the United States, a Fulbright Lecturer at Oxford University, held the Fulbright Chair for Senior Scholars at the University of Bologna, and a Fulbright Researcher in Japan, as well as a Visiting Fellow at the Russell Sage Foundation. Among his publications are Storm Center: The Supreme Court in American Politics, 5th ed., (2000); a two volume casebook, Constitutional Law and Politics, 4th ed., (2000); an annual Supreme Court Watch; and To Dream of Dreams: Religious Freedom in Postwar Japan (1996). He received the American Bar Association's Silver Gavel Award for contributing to the public's understanding of the law.

Excellent value; helped me pass the CLEP exam

A true textbook, Government By the People is not too “readable,” but it’s far from terrible. I bought it to study for my American Government CLEP exam, and it served that purpose well, although I would have preferred a Kindle version. Even if it's not the most current edition, the price was truly excellent for a textbook (and how much does American government change, anyway?). While I agree that there are subtle signs of a liberal bias on the part of the authors, it's really not that terrible and is to be expected, I suppose.

Required by HS teacher/class, hard to understand, user is an honor student, so, I'd say it is therefore, poorly written, and/or boring.....she really tries hard, and is very VERY intelligent, a junior at a college prep HS.

Rough looking, but gets the job done.

I rented this book for class and though it doesn't bother me personally, my copy came a bit more rough looking than anticipated. Torn pages, high-lighting, and bent/damaged cover but nothing that hinders me from using the book. I just hope they don't try to charge me for the damage. I took pics the day I got it and submitted them but never heard back so hopefully it was seen.

Frank Nagy is Managing Director of Frank Nagy Financial Services. Since 1998, Mr. Nagy has been providing business consultation to project managers, traders, and investment advisers seeking to launch their own hedge fund. As a former FINRA licensed Registered Representative (Series 7/63), stock and Forex traders, as well as fixed income traders have benefited from Mr Nagy's experience and knowledge in the securities and fund formation process. In addition to being a hedge fund consultant, Mr. Nagy serves as co-adviser to a number of hedge funds. From his fund managerial experience he greatly reduces the burden of setting up and advising on management of a hedge fund as well as making the appropriate introductions with the proper service providers that will best suit his client's needs. I had the opportunity to get down Frank Nagy's guide book on the subject ' The Ultimate Hedge Fund' and found it extremely useful as much as educational, as the author deals with a full gamut of legal aspects which will help anyone who is concentrating on setting up of a hedge fund.

The book also covers the areas and destinations which are ideal and safe, depending on clients' choice, while guiding the reader within the framework of legal boundaries as the case may be. I am quite happy that I ordered this book through Amazon and would recommend to anyone who has any ideas of setting up of a hedge fund and has any doubts how to go about it legally and safely.

For me personally, the book is a rare gem !

Excellent Guide on Hedge Funds

This is an excellent resource. I have found this to be extremely informative. Mr. Nagy has done an amazing job at explaining technical matters in a manner that even the novices can understand, without diluting the subject matter nor undermining the more seasoned veterans within the field. I recommend this book to anyone who is truly serious about understanding the inner workings of hedge funds or may just need a quick reference guide. This would make a great addition to any collection.

Some of the sloppiest writing I've come across

I should have known from the pretentious title that this book was going to be a disaster. The financial content may very well be accurate, but Mr. Nagy does such a grotesque disservice to the English language that getting through the pages is like clawing through a wool sweater. The only reason I am keeping this book on my shelf is so I can give it to my kids as a workbook on “how not to write”. The next time Mr. Nagy decides to write a book, he will need a very tolerant editor, or any editor for that matter.

Eye-opening part of history

I'm an author and read this while doing research for a novel. My eyes were opened. While gay, lesbian and bisexual Americans volunteered, and died in the service to our country during WWII, they were, for the most part, systematically discriminated against and treated with dishonesty, humiliation and psychological abuse.

Sometimes mere accusations with no proof were enough to drum a member out of our armed forces depriving them of rights and the GI Bill benefits. To make it worse, their draft boards were told and work got around in civilian life that they were unfit. In that era, after the war, the lack of an honorable discharge often cast such a dark shadow that many couldn't find work.

For those who believe being gay is a choice and a sin I disagree with you. I ask if you truly believe that or if you are doing a knee-jerk reaction to poison ideas implanted in you.

This story is history, and you won't read of it in standard history books. Discrimination is discrimination is wrong. The pledge of allegiance ends: "with liberty and justice for all."

You've come a long way baby, but not that far it seems.

A little academic in spots but a fascinating history of how gay men and women did their part during WWII. The official discrimination they faced was inconsistent certainly, with many officers looking the other way if they were pulling their weight and others going out of their way to "bust the queers". Regardless of your personal attitudes towards the gay community, the part they played in helping to win the war cannot be discounted.

Historical Prespective

this is an excellent book, revealing a bit of history that I am sure very few are aware. I thought is was well written and factual; the characters in this book are what they are and it was interesting to hear their point of view of a situation they bascily had no control over, being drafted into military service. If anything this helps give a presepctive as to why the military has acted the way they have when it comes to gay and lesbian service members. These individuals showed great courage and charater as their stories unfold. Well worth the read.

Work of poetry

The pages aren't flowing over with words and the cover is kinda cheesy. What is that saying? Oh yeah, "You can't judge a book by its what?"

I did a "Search inside the book" before I bought it and I have to say that I liked the original cover better. That's neither here nor there, though.

This is a work of poetry; you could even say a piece of art. It is better left to those who can appreciate the true unveiling of a heart. He doesn't need to spell it out because you'll either get it or you won't.

As a woman, it filled my heart with love. It is so tender, respectful, and honest. His words flow like a hummingbird floats, full of grace and beauty. I believe that he expresses what every woman wants to hear.

If it doesn't melt your heart I don't know what to say, because mine is in a puddle on the floor.

No more confusion

I bought this book thinking it was Brandon Boyd of Incubus. partly because the book is being sold with Incubus CD's but after receving the book and reading it I was not too sure. not to say its not a good book its okay, just a little mushy. Than after going to the book signing on May 12th some girls brought this book for Brandon to sign and he did not even know this book existed. so I just wanted to let everyone know as to not be confused this is NOT a Brandon Boyd of Incubus book.
And thank you to Brandon for clearing things up!!!

may not be the brandon you expect but he's still good

though i agree with those saying that you should research the books first, i must admit i was expecting the other brandon when i bought this (and no, i'm not a sad little teenage girl, but i like incubus' lyrics and am a huge fan of the BAND not just the singer).
now that's over with... this book may be a little mushy to some, but it really has some beautiful lines in there that can move even the least romantic of you. it's just full of short poems that really make you think about your own experiences.

Spectacular presentation..short on extras

How do you examine the Batman mythos in less than a thousand pages effectively?

Robert Greenberger and Matthew K Manning have taken a look at the Dark Knight from his 'creation'/evolution to the present day complex incarnation. To say that Bob Kane 'created' the Batman, would be a quick lie. Batman is the result of years of influences from the Black Bat (pulp magazine), Mary Reinhart (novel), Lew Merril, the Shadow, and many others. In Detective Comics #27, he first appeared, and overshadowed all of his influences.

The Museum includes chapters on

The Coming of the Caped Crusader
Bruce Wayne and His Family
Batcave and Gear
Robin
Gotham
Women of the Knight
the Allies
Batman Beyond
Essential Reading

Each covers complex matters with different storylines in a compelling manner. The graphics have been chosen with care. For instance, the Dick Sprang inside piece is stunning! Scans of existing original art rocks. The promotional items included in the plastic pockets are cool too. The neatest item is the signed Jewish Theatre playbill.

The book is heavy in 'newer' graphics (post 1980) and that is a weakness. There are many artists that I do not see represented that should be, and identification of many of them is not done. For instance, the Batman A to z Book, (pocket) was done by Tom Gill. This is not marked. Page 14 features a tryout by an unidentified artist, if I were a betting man, I would say it is Jack Sparling or Tom Gill again.

That aside, I enjoyed the book and our journey through history. I do understand the difficulty in choosing what to include, and the limitations of space.

With that, I highly recommend this book and await the opening of a DC Museum that has ongoing displays of artifacts, art, and rare items for those so inclined.

Great, but not Excellent

The Batman Vault is the latest in these "Museums in Books" series that both DC, Marvel, and various other studios such as Hanna-Barbara have embraced. They include reproductions of supposedly "lost," or rarely seen items that many fans may have missed coming across over the years.

2009's entry is DC's flagship character -- The Batman. One presumes that next year's will be Superman, but moving on, Robert Greenberger has done an excellent job in researching the DarkKnight Detective's many, many products which have entertained both kids and adults in his sixty year history.

Standouts include the previously unseen Sheldon Mayer (who previously wrote kid's comics Sugar and Spike)booklet "How to Draw Batman," which must have raised quite a few eyebrows in the seventies when the writers and editors were trying to make Batman more dark and gritty.

This eighteen page story is a highlight and should be required reading for all Bat-writers.

Other rarely seen illustrations include: Bob Kane's Christmas cards featuring the Bat-family, the 1960 Bat-family portrait done for that year's Bat-Annual, the Bruce Timm early design for Catwoman that was scrapped during production, a sixties Batman record cover.

While I give kukos for these items, I really wish Mr. Greenburger could have included some more photos of the sixties Bat-toys, which are now commanding thousands of dollars on ebay. For example, the Ideal Batman Utility Belt had some great box art, maybe some more of Joe Gielisa's newspaper strips from the late sixties. Maybe even a CD of some of Bat children's records or one of the appearances of Batman on the 40's Superman radio program.

I even seem to recall some Bat postcards that were called "Bat-o-Grams" that featured sixties art that I picked up at a Custer, SD store.

Again. A nice collection and should provide hours of entertainment, but me being the nit picker that I am would have liked a bit more.

A Stunning Disappointment

My anticipation level for this was so high that after purchasing it I scheduled a 'private time' just so I could fully enjoy going through it uninterrupted. As a Batman fan of over 40 years, I can honestly say this is the most disappointing piece of Bat-ephemera I've ever encountered. How DC could screw up such a promising concept in such spectacular fashion is beyond me.

A beautifully-bound book, it nevertheless binds its pages in 'notebook' style, held by metal rings, which makes it much more vulnerable to ripped pages and further destruction from the 'gimmick' of promotional items included in the plastic pockets on some of the pages that add weight and stress on the already precarious binding. This would be a small quibble if the actual items were as exciting and display-worthy as they are described - as it is, there really isn't a single poster or ad reproduction worthy of more than a passing glance. As Tim Lasiuta points out in his review: "The book is heavy in 'newer' graphics (post 1980) and that is a weakness. There are many artists that I do not see represented that should be, and identification of many of them is not done."

The text is run-of-the-mill and bare bones, not offering anything new and oftentimes glaringly obvious in the lack of detail and history of Batman's evolution, and the classic artists such as Dick Sprang, Bill Finger, Jerry Robinson and even Neal Adams, arguably the most revolutionary visual interpreter of the entire Batman universe, are relegated to smaller pictures and not nearly enough representation. J. Smith rightly states in his/her review: "..I really wish Mr. Greenburger could have included some more photos of the sixties Bat-toys, which are now commanding thousands of dollars on ebay."

Complaints over what's missing from 'The Batman Vault' could be minimal if the material that WAS included was more carefully chosen and given the in-depth treatment that a project like this demands. With so much amazing Batman art, history and cultural analysis available for collecting into a single product deserving of being referenced and appreciated many times over, the creators of this "Museum-In-A-Book" totally missed the mark, and as soon as I finished it, I traded it to my local comic book store for credit to purchase items much more worthy to this life-long Batman fan.

Skeptical of other reviews

This book looks like it would be a great asset for learning neurology, but I'm a very skeptical when 10 out of 12 reviews are from reviewers who have never reviewed anything else (as of when I wrote this review), as well as by the fact that 9 out of 12 were filed on the same day. Also, none of those reviews are "Amazon verified purchases." This just seems rather unusual to me. The writer is a professor at NYU, so I would expect this is a quality book, but the situation with the reviews just make me very hesitant. It would be nice if Amazon offered a preview of the text so we could gauge things for ourselves.

I may still buy the text and just return it if it isn't good quality, but I just thought it might help others if I posted this "head's-up" regarding the reviews.

An engaging way to study neurology!

Case-based neurology is the perfect tool when studying for exams or trying to excel as a clinician. It presents chief complaints that are commonly seen in practice, and takes the reader through the history, exam findings, differential diagnosis, and management in a compelling, interesting manner. This is not the typical neurology textbook, but rather real life cases that have actually been seen by physicians and doctors in training. I will most definitely continue to use this as a reference throughout the remainder of residency and beyond.

Realistic and Well-Written Case-Based Textbook

I am a PGY3 neurology resident and have found this book to be extremely helpful. I almost didn't buy this book due to the questionabe reviews, but I ultimately decided to take the risk because I was disappointed with the other case-based neurology textbooks I had purchased. I have been very impressed with this book, and it mirrors clinical cases one sees during neurology residency particularly well. The images are high quality, and the explanations and tables are detailed and succinct. I have bought many neurology books and have been using this as one of my main three books (I am also using the Clinical Neurology book by Cheng-Ching and the Color Atlas of Neurology by Rohkamm). Those three have been my reference books for much of the end of my PGY2 year and beginning of PGY3 year. I can't speak to why there are many reviews that are all 5-stars and on the same day, but I do highly recommend this book.

very useful contents for real life but some british accent bothers me. because I'm living in US. and some words are not used her

I came here about 7 years ago. and I thought I don't have any problem with speaking English and working with Americans.
but, I realized I need to keep speaking or studying. Since I quit working and staying home all day for 2-3 years without meeting anyone (my hubby and I was using korean all the time), I noticed I was losing confidence to speak and meet Americans.

I felt terrible that I became like that. I felt so miserable to lose confidence. I even had experience to work as a manager. but, I felt I came yesterday.

I started looking for good books to improve my speaking. and I checked these books before buying. It seemed to have nice contents by looking inside book here.

I tell you honstly.
This is really good books. They have really nice contents to learn about real life.

So, I really like every kinds of coversation charts like speaking in police station, pharmacy store, shopping, train staion, buying home or renting home e.t.c.

This is so fun to study and very very useful to learn English.

but, In the beginning, I didn't like British accent and some british words Americans are not using.
For example, bill (british), check (usa) at the restaurant
postcode(british), zip code (usa)

In my personal preference, I don't like british pronouncition, but, there are many accents from world wide on these books. Japanese speaks japanese accent, Indian speaks their accent.
but, anyway, very helpful and useful. So, I'm keeping it.

and another one I don't like is that It's a little bit confusing to answer the questions on books.

Like I said, Cd and contents of Cd are very nice. but If you are focus on answering questions by listening cd on the book, maybe It will make you irritate. I was like that.

So, My plan is to listen only cd.

It's an excellent material if you wanna practice grammar. I was looking for book which could help me to improve my grammar and learn common expressions. It has a lot of very good excercises from the real life. I can recommend it. I bought all the series.
