I have really enjoyed reading about the Fuentes brothers. Alex, the oldest and lead in Perfect Chemistry, started out in a gang but went through the dangerous process of being jumped out because he wanted more for his family. Carlos, the middle child and lead in Rules of Attraction, wanted to prove that he was the tough guy and in some ways sought out being in a gang. And then there's Luis. He's lived a bit more sheltered of a life. He's the smart kid. The one in the family with a plan--he wants to be an astronaut. The problem is that trouble follows the Fuentes boys, and Luis is no exception. It doesn't help that he seems to be a bit of an adrenaline junkie.

I enjoyed how Chain Reaction started out a bit different. I wasn't sure that I was going to like how things started with Luis and Nikki being so young. The book starts with them both being just fifteen years old, but then jumps ahead two years. The beginning was necessary to set up how much anger Nikki has, specifically directed towards the Latino Blood, and how easy Luis had things back in Colorado plus how quickly things can get away from you when thrown into the wrong group of people.

Nikki was a tough nut for Luis to crack. She's feisty because she's been hurt in the past. She's been through a lot that only a few have any knowledge about. She's even aloof with her friends sometimes. I could understand her hesitation. Luis himself was somewhat frustrating to me. His strategy of finding out what Chuy from the Latino Blood wanted with him frustrated me a little. He really caused more problems for himself than need be.

Ultimately, Chain Reaction wasn't my favorite of the series. I enjoyed how it was different from the other two. I enjoyed that Nikki was Latina herself even though she wasn't as immersed initially into the culture as Luis. And I read this one just as quickly as the previous two. I also really appreciated the presence of the other characters: Alex, Brittany, Paco, Carlos, Kiara, and even Mama Fuentes. Chain Reaction gets 3.5 Stars. Have you read Chain Reaction? The Gorgeous Fuentes Brothers are back!!!!

Those gorgeous Fuentes brothers are back and all three of them get to be in this story! First Alex, then Carlos and now Luis is steaming up the pages with the one girl that is right for him, but struggling with his ties to the gangs. Once again we get to see the unbreakable family ties that bind this family together and experience the heartaches and difficulties that they try to overcome. Another winner from Simone Elkeles!

Luis and his mother move back to Illinois to be near Alex and Brittany after their marriage and first son is born. Luis is immediately sucked into the pull of the Latino Bloods when they threaten to harm his family if he doesn't join. He has finally got Nikki, a hot girl from school to start trusting him and going out with him, and he promises her that he won't get involved with the gangs like her previous boyfriend Marco did. Marco left her for the gang and she has trust issues and other past grievances against Marco and the gang. Unfortunately, Luis has lied to her and his family and is one more Fuentes boy caught in the gang's fist. This is an exciting, romantic read with a twist that makes it hard to put down until the very end.

Just a warning, but just like "Perfect Chemistry" and "Rules of Attraction", this story contains profanity, sensuality and sex. If you have never read Simone Elkeles before, you might be taken aback that this is rated YA even though it deals with realistic high school drama. Although these are stand alone stories, they are more enjoyable when read in sequence as they do refer to past events that we have read in previous books.

In Perfect Chemistry, the LB terrified me and I was ...

Plot: The plot of Chain Reaction was very similar to the plot of the first two; a Fuentes brother gets mixed up with the Latino Blood, his rich hoity-toity girlfriend disapproves of his gang affiliation and eventually loves trumps all. I was kind of hoping to see something at least slightly different with this third installment, but it fell short. Even though it was very similar, it didn’t have the same impact on me that the first two did. In Perfect Chemistry, the LB terrified me and I was constantly scared for Alex, yet in this one, the threats just didn’t seem as threatening nor did the danger feel as dangerous. There was honestly no reason for Luis to get jumped into the gang and I felt he completely overreacted when he found out the big “secret”.

Characters: To be honest, I didn’t really like either Luis or Nikki. The beginning of the book started off with them being 15 and then the book fast forwards to two years later, but it sort of felt like they hadn’t matured or aged at all. I had to remind myself that they were, indeed, 17. And both constantly said one thing and then did the complete opposite which was frustrating. My favorite thing about these Simone Elkeles books is the intense and sexy romances. This book didn’t have either. The romance felt too forced and rushed to me which really took away from my overall enjoyment of the novel. They went from hating each other to loving each other in 2 seconds flat. It was a bit unrealistic because they didn’t even really know each other, I felt. There was a lot more emotional connection with the first two books and I really liked those romances better.

Cover: Of the three books, this isn’t my favorite cover. I didn’t really understand the whole shower thing, but I do like that all the covers are really similar and that each features the appropriate Fuentes brother.

Overall Impression: Alex and Carlos will forever be my favorites, so if you haven’t at least read the first book in the series, you definitely should.

About the Author
UK author, JERRY SCHEFF spent his early life in Vallejo, California, moving to Sacramento when he was fourteen. In the early 1960s, after a brief spell in the Navy and time spent building his chops in Southern California, he took the leap to move to Los Angeles, where he quickly rose to the top among the droves of pro session players. In the late sixties, he began his work with Elvis Presley. He has played with countless artists and continues to tour with the TCB band.

Delightful book that I would recommend to anyone interested in how to survive life as a musician

Jerry Scheff has a very endearing and warm style of writing. Reading his biography is like listening to a favourite Uncle telling you his old stories. Some you will have heard of, but now they are more fleshed out and even more interesting. Especially when we know the key players all too well! One oddity about the book is how he jumps around with the chronology at times but while this could be annoying, most times it is understandable.
The book is 235 pages – full marks for a good index – of which Scheff’s stories with Elvis take up 68 pages of the book.

Jerry’s tale of his early years and first becoming inspired as a bass-player, even though not being involved with Elvis, is a sheer delight. There are some revealing stories of 50s’ racism in the black jazz music scene and some interesting revelations on how the jazz, R & B and soul musicians often intersected in their session and stage work.
The story of his first true gig as a white, skinny, 14 year-old in a duck-tail hairdo trying to impress a seriously cool black jazz band – paying until his fingers bled – is a fabulous tale. As well as being just one insight on how hard it is to become a successful musician.

A load of producers and musicians have passed through Jerry’s life and it is amazing the amount of links there are in bands and recordings one has heard of over the years.

Jerry started playing with up-coming stars like Billy Preston (The Beatles etc) as far back as 1965 before recording with the likes of Sammy Davis Jr and Neil Diamond.
There is also the strange oddity of Red West calling him up to play on Elvis’ ‘Easy Come, Easy Go’ session. Red West asked "Are you Jerry Scheff the trumpet player?", to which Jerry of course agreed - although he had never played trumpet before in his life!
(You will have to get the book to read his wonderful stories about starting out as a Tuba Player!)

In his tales of Elvis and touring with the TCB Band, Jerry imparts some real warmth and joy of what it was like to be so close to all these wonderful musicians we feel we know so well.
The book starts with the fateful day of August 16th 1977 but it is a real pleasure of the book that Scheff tells of you the shocking news in such an open, honest and warm manner. He welcomes you to the TCB family in such a special way - even on the day when they heard the devastating news.
In the book Jerry Scheff reveals what it was like to spend time with all of Elvis’ musicians but also has some particularly wonderful tales about Glen D Hardin and Ronnie Tutt both of whom he was very close to.
Who knew that Scheff and his family, as well as Glen D Hardin, opted to move into quiet Las Vegas apartments in preference to the noise and craziness of living in the Hilton hotel for free? His pet parrot Otis also features in some wonderful tales!
There are stories of JD Sumner and The Stamps in Elvis’ cool "super-fly" suits, humourous on-stage pranks, getting involved with the Mafia, the troubles with Colonel Parker, getting close to young "Groupies" and all the other trials of being on-tour.

One feels that there is a real truth to his biography and while Jerry doesn’t bad-mouth anybody nor does he evade the topic of pretty heavy-duty drug taking that was all part of the 70s and 80’s culture.
In fact he tells a marvellous tale of a joke played on him at the Jungle Room sessions..
Another exciting section is on what it was like to be there playing for Elvis on Opening Night July 31, 1969….
Jerry Scheff’s stories about Elvis take up around a third of the book but don’t let that put you off as the rest is filled with marvellous tales of all sort of musicians, such as working with Roy Orbison, Elvis Costello, John Denver (some great stories there) and The Doors.

There is also a lovely chapter about touring with Bob Dylan and his Rolling Thunder Review. As with any auto-biography there is a few chapters dedicated to the early years his family and family life. I had no idea Jerry would opt out for a while for basic ‘island living’ fishing for crabs and oysters. His tales of living with Otis the parrot are particularly funny.
At the end of the book there's a very telling story of why Jerry quit the 'Elvis In Concert' tour. And it all comes down to wanting to play real music!
In the middle of the book are 16 pages of black & white photos of Jerry playing with various bands which helps put the stories into visual context. Fans will however have seen most of the photos of Jerry playing with Elvis. There is an unfortunate mistake where a two–page spread of Elvis performing in Madison Square Garden is labelled as being from the Aloha special! I also wish they had used a better looking photo of Elvis on the front cover.
Overall Verdict: This is a delightful book that I would recommend to anyone interested in what it is like to survive a successful career as a working musician. There are plenty of great insights along the way and Jerry Scheff’s writing style is very easy to read. Of course most people will buy the book only for the stories of Elvis but there is much more here to enjoy. With plenty of laughs and lovely insights along the way, you learn a lot not only about Elvis and the TCB Band but also about other well-known musicians.

Everybody that hears a CD of Elvis's live performances say; Who is that Bass Player? Jerry Scheff, one of The Best in the Business! This book tells of his career, playing with some of the most influential entertainers in the music business. A must for music enthusiast! Way Down! Playing Bass... is well written and has some cool photo's. This guy was as most bass players are, is one cool cat. His account of the day he found out Elvis had died is worth purchasing the book alone, not to mention all the other stuff. I was delightfully surprised how much i enjoyed reading this Book! Thanks for taking the time to write if Jerry....

This book is a good road map to Danish...it does an excellent job of explaining grammar and sentence structure.
What makes it frustrating for a beginner like me, however, is the way it approaches vocabulary. I've learned several other languages, and I like to learn new nouns in groups ("animals" "professions" "rooms of the house")
This book throws huge groups of unrelated words at you as it goes about explaining sentence structure, and I found them almost impossible to keep straight.
I ended up keeping a separate notebook to organize them myself!
Another important point: Pronunciation is the most difficult part of Danish, so I'd recommend buying this book WITH the cassettes. I bought the book alone, and now to get the cassettes - which are really necessary - I'm going to have to buy another copy of the book!

Best Introductory teach-yourself-Danish course on the market

I have tried just about all of the beginning Danish language courses on the market and this one is my favorite. It moves quickly and covers a lot of material, so I'm glad I tried some of the other courses first, to give me a basic introduction. This program does a good job of teaching conversational Danish while introducing the essential grammar rules a little at a time. The authors have a good sense for what is essential and what can wait. It teaches many colloquial expressions and rules of Danish sentence construction, so I am now able to create my own expressions and not just parrot back the ones I have memorized. The book has a few misspellings, as other reviewers have mentioned, such as "hi" in chapter one--it should be spelled "hej"--but I catch the occasional errors because I also work with a dictionary. (There are very few). The four cassette tapes are an absolute must. We English speakers will never get Danish pronunciation right unless we hear it spoken by a native. You will find that native speakers in Denmark slur their final t's more than the speakers on the tape (Danes make a a sound on some d's and t's that only Danes can make--it is NOT "TH," as all the books claim). But the extra careful pronunciation on the tape is useful for learning the language. This is the only tape that enunciates carefully enough so that I can tell the difference between words like "dansker" and "danskere." Another reviewer complained that the word lists are not grouped by topical subject type. That reviewer missed the fact that the words are grouped according to which spelling and conjugation patterns they follow. That is very useful for memorizing all those confounded endings on Danish nouns and adjectives. This program makes me hopeful that learning a foreign language is possible and easy with a little daily effort on my part. It is fun! I'm driving my family nuts, talking in Danish around the house. The other excellent beginning course that I am using is from Rosetta Stone--but it is a lot more money.

excellent, but not flawless

This book is an excellent introduction to learning the Danish language. However, several misspellings are present within the text. As this can be a problem, I would recommend to EVERYONE to get the accompanying cassettes which compliment the course. This would also act as a good precautionary due to the fact that at the beginning, Danish is often very difficult to understand until your ear has been finely tuned to the sounds of the language. Aside from the mistakes, the text gives a simple and easily understandable approach to grammar and also to the vocabulary. The course uses such things as humor and fairy tales to teach the language, along with several model sentences and short dialogues to hear the language spoken at a normal rate of speech. Having the cassettes comes in handy the most with these dialogues. All in all, this is an excellent intro to the language, and one can deal fairly well with Danish after completing the course, as it expresses both formal and informal usage of the language.

This massive tome contains some of the good, the bad and the ugly stories that have helped give "hard" science fiction its reputation as a refuge for writers more comfortable with a slide rule than with a pen. The collection starts off strongly enough, with Ursula K. Le Guin's "Nine Lives," a lovely story about cloning, and it doesn't get into real trouble until it reaches Hal Clement's "Proof," which is a textbook case of the maxim proposed by Gregory Benford in his introduction, that "hard SF focuses on minimally characterized figures acting against a landscape of universal, scientific truths." The anthology then bounces through mostly lesser stories by luminaries of the field (Asimov, Heinlein, Clarke, Wolfe, Dick), several pieces by SF's pioneers (Kipling, Wells, Poe, Verne), and a small number of landmark works like William Gibson's "Johnny Mnemonic" (the story credited with starting the cyberpunk movement). Impressive tales by J. G. Ballard, John M. Ford, Bruce Sterling, Donald M. Kingsbury and Kate Wilhelm improve matters considerably, but then the anthology closes, inexplicably, with Verner Vinge's dated "Bookworm, Run!" Though the book's title claims that "wonder" is in "the ascent" in hard science fiction, there's little sense of forward motion--perhaps because of the odd, nonchronological arrangement of work. While hard-core hard-SF fans will no doubt find plenty to excite them here, most readers are in for the ascent of ennui.

Semi-Hard Sort-of New Wave Science Fiction

This is a massive and ambitious work. High quality and a lot for the money. I felt somewhat deceived by the title though. Many of the stories seem to define Hard Science Fiction by illustrating an exception to the rules. The editors seem to have gone out of their way to include nontypical examples and surprise us with authors that we didn't expect. H.G.Wells? OK. Rudyard Kipling? I don't think so. J.G.Ballard. "Hard SF is About the Beauty of Truth"

David Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer are experienced science fiction anthologists, well-known for their annual "Year's Best SF" collections. In this themed anthology, they trace the development of "hard science fiction" through 1994. In three separate introductions by Gregory Benford, Cramer, and then Hartwell, this subgenre is defined and redefined. Fascinating stuff.

Then come the stories, sixty-seven of them. Each is introduced by a tightly-written, part-page description of the author's life, beliefs, and other written works. There are some very good stories here. I'll list five that I liked very much. Your top five may well be different.

Tom Godwin's "The Cold Equations" illustrates the danger of taking along just enough of everything--air, fuel, mass--on a space trip. There is always the unexpected.

Poul Anderson's "Kyrie" demonstrates how love can last forever--and we find this not the least bit comforting.

In James Blish's "Surface Tension" the main characters are marooned in an alien world and must overcome obstacles and opposition to build the ship that can rise above their world into the unknown. Will their ancient metal records help them or hold them back?

Arthur C. Clark takes "The Longest Science Fiction Story Ever Told" and strips it down to its essentials.

Isaac Asimov serves up perhaps the longest short-short science fiction story ever told as he slowly builds the tension while we wait for a supercomputer's answer to "The Last Question."

At nearly a thousand pages, this collection requires some serious reading commitment. If you like good science fiction, it's worth it. These stories are all worth reading and most bring the sense of wonder characteristic of good, imaginative writing. True to their hard SF tradition, the authors don't "fake" the science one bit more than is necessary.

The Definitive Hard Science Fiction Collection

If you're a fan of hard science fiction, you need to own "The Ascent of Wonder: The Evolution of Hard SF." Period. Even if you have, as I do, a large collection of hardcover and paperback science fiction books that collectively contain many of the stories reprinted in this volume, you still need it.

As you might expect, many of the stories are from the "Golden Age" of the 1940's and `50's: you'll find classics such as Hal Clement's "Proof" (1942), James Blish's "Surface Tension" (1952) and Tom Godwin's haunting "The Cold Equations" (1954). Representing later years are such riveting tales as Theodore L. Thomas' "The Weather Man" (1962), Bob Shaw's "Light of Other Days" (1966) and Donald Kingsbury's "To Bring In the Steel" (1978). The 67 stories in "The Ascent of Wonder" make up a fantastic smorgasbord of the best hard science fiction of all time. But wait, there's more...there are three essays, totaling about 30 pages, on hard science fiction, written by editors David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Kramer and noted author Gregory Benford. Each story also contains a relatively short (half a page or so) but exceptionally insightful introduction. These alone make "The Ascent of Wonder" worth having.

With 990 pages of small, dense type, this volume is big and heavy. But even if you have to put an extra brace on your bookshelf to hold the weight, you should buy it. Quite simply, there is no better compilation of the imaginative, speculative, science-based stories that form the genre's "visionary core."
