About the Author
Konrad Heiden was a journalist and historian of the Weimar Republic and Nazi eras, most noted for The F�hrer—the first influential biography of Adolf Hitler. He died in 1966.
Ralph Manheim (1907-1992) was an American translator of German and French literature, as well as occasional works from Dutch, Polish and Hungarian. The PEN/Ralph Manheim Medal for Translation, a major lifetime achievement award in the field of translation. is named in honor of Manheim and his work.
Richard Overy is professor of history at King's College, London. His many acclaimed books on World War II include Why the Allies Won and The Battle of Britain.

First hand knowledge from his experience at the time.

One of the best sources available on Hitler. He observed the Nazis first hand from 1920 till 1944. His research is superb. Much of the book was written while he was living in France after being forced to flee Germany.

Konrad Heiden was a newspaper man who knew and covered Hitler from the early days of his, Hitler's, career, circa 1920s. This study of the man who would be "Fuehrer" - published ca, 1944 - is the biography other biographers of Hitler consult when preparing their own works. Heiden was not a "follower" of National Socialist philosophy, and his less than favorable reports on the tactics of early "Nazi" activities led to Heiden's eventually fleeing Germany for his life. A must read for those seeking to "explain" Hitler...
