Good study!

This is a great textbook for those who are interested in astronomy! If you're interested in learning more about it such as the constellations and the science behind the sun, rotation, etc I totally recommend it! And it's not really thick either so it's easy to carry anywhere.

The only medical dictionary you will ever need.

Having just started my medical studies I was looking for a complete dictionary to meet my demand for a comprehensive and "easy-to-use" book to guide my among the vast and sometimes difficult medical language. I found quickly that Stedman's had everything i could ever ask for in a medical dictionary. It's up to date in current research and also has many entries for termonology of old. The book is very comprehensive and detailed and even surpassed my dictionary of organic chemistry when I studied the subject.
What I especially apriciate with this book is it's pedagogical illustrations and a passage with "building-blocks of the medical language" wich has been a great help for me in understanding and memorizing medical terms.
During my studies I have compared my dictionary with many other medical dictonaries and have found that Stedman's remains my first choise by far!

What else can you ask? (Some veterinary terms, perhaps?)

I teach Parasitology and I have found that my students learn the terms more easily if they know what they mean. So I needed a medical dictionary to help me with the etimology. Being a sort of a bibliophile, I had older editions of the 2 major medical dictionaries in the English language: the Dorland's and the Stedman's. I checked the old texts thoroughly and read carefully the descriptions of the new ones. I can't remember why I chose the Stedman's but I do remember that it was a very tight decision. So I have had the Stedman's for a few weeks and I can't think of anything else that I may need in a dictionary: it has excellent typography, clear definitions, beautiful color text and illustrations, comprehensive etimology (the Greek roots are NOT written in Greek, which is a blessing for me). I might only wish the inclusion of some specific veterinary terms (which are also missing in the competition) and sturdier covers (the corners of the hardback edition covers arrived bent; it was a 5,000 miles trip though)

The most useful dictionary in ur office

I have been using this great dictionary since I joined medical school. Even now as a doctor, I still use it when I'm stuck with a meaning of a medical word. Features include:
- Numerous colored illustrations including ADAM Anatomical Art, new diagnostic plates e.g. imaging and clinical and microscopic plates.
- Common medical abbreviations.
- Highly organized vocabularies.
- Highly organized entries and cross-references.
- Special reference to medical eponyms.
- Shows the difference between British and American spellings.
- Pronunciation key.
- Easy & simple Wordfinder.
- Genus Finder.
- A-Z vocabularies.
- Origins of the medical words e.g. Latin, Greek etc. which attracts me for the most ! Learning the origins of the medical words can be a boon to learning medical language. It makes remembering medical terms easier.
- Appendices including: Table of elements & their atomic weights, Comparative temperature scales, Temperature equivalents, Weights & measures, Symbols, Laboratory reference range values, Blood groups, Diagnosis related groups, Certified Regional Poison Control Centers, CDC Universal Precautions, AIDS - resources (By State), AIDS Hotlines (By State), and AIDS education & training centers (By region).
- 27th Edition comes in 2098 pages, and was published by Lippincott, Williams & Wilkins company (great company by the way!), 2000.
I wish there could be Stedman's Dictionary on PDA handhelds (e.g. Palm) in the future.
I strongly advise medical students and other health care workers to use this invaluable dictionary. 10/10

About the Author

Dr. Ashish Verma holds a Ph.D. from IIT Bombay and is currently serving as an assistant professor of transportation engineering at the Department of Civil Engineer and the Center for Infrastructure, Sustainable Transportation, and Urban Planning (CiSTUP) at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, India. He has authored more than 70 research publications in the areas of sustainable transportation and road safety. He is an editorial board member of leading international journals of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and other publishers. Professor T. V. Ramanayya holds a degree in civil engineering, a master's in transportation engineering, and a Ph.D. in transportation engineering, all from the Regional Engineering College (presently known as the National Institute of Technology) Warangal, Andhra Pradesh. • Favor standard controls. Because they’re commonplace, the standard set of controls is sometimes dismissed as visually dull. Not so fast: commonplace means familiarity and ease for your audience. Conventions are critical to instant and effortless communication. Before creating a brand new interface metaphor or inventing your own custom controls, ask whether it might be done better with the built-in gadgetry.


• A coat of paint. Standard controls don’t have to be dreary. Use custom colors and graphics to give them a fresh identity. This technique requires a light touch, however; don’t distract from the content itself or drain the meaning from otherwise familiar controls.

Wine Steward uses standard lists (known as table views in iOS) but creates a vintage ambience by draping a backdrop image across the screen. The app adds a parchment graphic to the background of each table cell, making each entry appear to be written on an aged wine label. The burgundy-tinted navigation bar maintains the app’s wine flavor.

• • Don’t be afraid to take risks. Make sure your interfaces are intuitive, sure, but don’t be afraid to try something completely new and different. Designers and developers are hatching fresh iPhone magic every day, and there’s still much to explore and invent. While you should look hard at whether you might accomplish what you need to do with standard controls, it’s also worth asking, Am I going far enough?


• The app icon is your business card. The icon carries disproportionate weight in the marketing of your app, and it’s important to give it disproportionate design attention, too. Be descriptive more than artistic. Make your app icon a literal description of your app’s function, interface, name, or brand.


• Use a dull launch image. Disguise your app’s launch image as the app background for a faster perceived launch. Always cultivate the illusion of suspended animation when switching in and out of your app.


• Be kind to new users. Provide simple welcome-mat pointers for first-timers. Beware of more complex help screens; they’re warning signs of an overcomplicated interface.

About the Author
Josh Clark is a designer specializing in mobile design strategy and user experience. He's author of Tapworthy: Designing Great iPhone Apps (O'Reilly, 2010) and Best iPhone Apps (O'Reilly, 2009). Josh's outfit Global Moxie offers consulting services and workshops to help media companies, design agencies, and creative organizations build tapworthy mobile apps and effective websites, with clients including eBay and Nokia.

Josh is a regular speaker at international technology conferences, regularly educating designers, managers, and developers about mobile strategy and designing for phones and tablets.

Before the internet swallowed him up, Josh was a management consultant at Monitor Group in Cambridge, Mass, and before that, a producer of national PBS programs at Boston's WGBH. He shared his three words of Russian with Mikhail Gorbachev, strolled the ranch with Nancy Reagan, hobnobbed with Rockefellers, and wrote trivia questions for a primetime game show. In 1996, he created the uberpopular "Couch-to-5K" (C25K) running program, which has helped millions of skeptical would-be exercisers take up jogging. If you're a startup, get this book. Now.

Here's why: it's not only a great guide to what makes iPhone apps successful, but what will increasingly be the way to make successful software for any platform. Josh does a fantastic job of getting the reader into the right mindset for creating successful apps.

This is an interface, big-idea, that's why that design works book, not a coding book. Nor is it a "how to market your iPhone app book". That said, the interviews alone with designers of big important iPhone apps about how they really designed those apps is worth the price many times over.

Warning: you will probably spend more on buying apps Josh uses as examples of what he is talking about than you will on the book itself - I guess the skills he developed writing his last book, "Best Iphone Apps: The Guide for Discriminating Downloaders", gave him five star ability for picking great to awesome apps.

Also, while I almost never buy anymore actual paper books, this one is worth it - the color, gloss stock, painstaking layout and content structure would not be done justice as a .pdf.

I could write a longer review, but I'd rather go back to reading, re-reading, mulling and thinking about the what Josh covered in this book. Can't wait for the iPad book!

Full of insight -- more than you might think fits in one book

I've worked in mobile for several years now, on iOS, Android, j2me, Symbian and Windows Mobile (to varying degrees), both native and web apps and I have to say that I'm totally impressed by this book. There isn't a chapter or even a section that doesn't have insight.

I've been reading iOS/UX-focused blogs for a while (Marco, Daring Fireball, Ignore the Code, Dustin Curtis) and I've got a lot of views at various aspects of what makes iOS so wonderful, but this book is closer to giving me the complete picture, rather than just glimpses of various aspects.

Clearly, Josh understands iOS at a deep, deep level. You wouldn't expect this level of understanding from anyone except perhaps the designers of iOS and iPhone.

You'll find insightful comments on various topics like:
- various navigation paradigms and the advantages and disadvantages of each
- how to design your app icon
- theming
- all the major aspects of iOS, like alerts and notifications
- product definition
- when to launch other apps from within yours and when not to.

I plan to read this book again after a while. It's that good.

Pre-ordered this book after hearing Josh speak at SXSW. Well worth the wait. This book covers all of the basics of iPhone UI but *even more important* are the first person interviews with guys like Josh Williams (Gowalla CEO) and Joe Hewitt (Facebook app).

Great Approach to Creating / Managing A Wardrobe

If you are frustrated by the standard quizzes and capsule rules -- pick up this book.

Anuschka lays out a detailed approach to developing your personal wardrobe. She stresses that personal style is very different from being fashionable. She explains when a capsule makes sense, when a "curated" wardrobe makes sense, and how to blend both. Most importantly, she teaches you how to define your own clothing rules. She does not provide lists or pictures of what works together -- that's your homework. She does provide completed samples of each assignment. Do not purchase if you want a quick, do-it-in-one-afternoon guide. It was work; however, I have a clear set of personal rules, fabric preferences, and outfit formulas. Pieces a quick-capsule-approach guided me to discard or pack-away are now in purposeful use!

While Anuschka is exceptional on the wardrobe element, I was only able to follow everything based on previous work. I'd be a bit lost on color, personalized style words, and garment basics without the prior read of Bobbie Thomas, The Power of Style (similar approach with clearer guidance on personal style & color palettes), Nancy Nix-Rice, Looking Good Every Day (required text for FIT NY Image Consultants), and Jennifer Scott, Lessons From Madame Chic (light-hearted stories underscoring and explaining personal style, quality, upkeep, yep, no quizzes her either). For me, understanding the fundamentals allowed me to maximize Anuschka's approach.

Having read those books, Anuschka is exceptional at the final mechanics of building and updating a wardrobe that meets YOUR needs and style personality. Really, no book can do it all. The Curated Closet is the final piece to my personal style & wardrobe journey!

Best wardrobe overhaul method out there!

I've been doing capsule wardrobes and working on editing my closet for the last two years. Here's what I love about The Curated Closet, and why I think it's better than the other wardrobe overhaul methods I've tried:

First of all, none of it is cookie-cutter; it's about what works for YOU. It starts with a look at your current outfits (as opposed to pieces in your wardrobe). She asks you to take pictures of your outfits for two weeks and then looks at your FAVORITE outfits, that you felt the best in, and helps you analyze them to figure out WHY you love them and then build your whole wardrobe around those elements. This is different from every other challenge I've looked at, which have you look at all the clothes you WORE and build your wardrobe around the pieces you wore, which is NOT the same as building it around your favorite outfits. For me, I had a lot of favorite pieces, mixed with filler pieces that I only felt "meh" about, and consequently only felt okay about the outfits, even though they had some of my favorite pieces. No more "meh"!!!

Walking away from this book I am purging a good chunk of my wardrobe (again; I'm down to less than 40 items now) but now have a clear set of guidelines for building it back up. I have a color palette, a couple of go-to outfit formulas, and a very specific but concise shopping list, of what I want to add, in order of priority. I finally feel like I've reached an end-goal and don't need to purge anymore! All that's left is to find the few pieces on my shopping list, and enjoy finally having my ideal wardrobe. Thank you for writing this book Anuschka Reeves, and thank you to Caroline at the Un-Fancy blog for recommending it!!

Helpful, grounded and a delight to read!

A delight to read & very, very helpful.

I started paying attention to my style about 4 years ago... and it was a messy first couple of years. Two years ago, I fell in love with the capsule wardrobe concept. It completely transformed the way I shopped, thought about clothes and got dressed in the morning. Love it! I'm now transitioning into a wardrobe that is less structured and even more awesome -- and this book was so helpful and illuminating.

The things that I especially loved include the styling challenges (it really opened my eyes about what I can do with my closet -- and what I was missing from an accessories standpoint), the tips on how to buy quality (it instantly made me a better shopper) and the detailed information on choosing a color pallet. I'm taking a step away from my historical color pallet this fall and this book made me feel more confident in those choices.

Overall, a delightful read and a sane, resonant voice to guide you through dressing in a way that is more "you" and less everyone else.

Downsides: the styles displayed in the book just didn't resonate with me (I love saturated color... and they seemed to be very summery) -- but it really wasn't an impact.

About the Author
John R. Levine was a member of a computer club before high school students, or even high schools, had computers. He wrote his first program in 1967 on an IBM 1130 (a computer almost as fast as your modern digital wristwatch, only more difficult to use). He became an official system administrator of a networked computer at Yale in 1975 and has been working in the computer and network biz since 1977. He got his company on to Usenet (see Part IV) early enough that it appears in a 1982 Byte magazine article in a map of Usenet, which then was so small that the map fit on half a page.

He used to spend most of his time writing software, although now he mostly writes books (including UNIX� For Dummies�, 4th Edition, and Internet Secrets�, both from IDG Books Worldwide, Inc.) because it's more fun and he can do so at home in the hamlet of Trumansburg, New York, where he holds the exalted rank of sewer commissioner and offers free samples to visitors and plays with his baby daughter when he's supposed to be writing. He also does a fair amount of public speaking. () He holds a B.A. and a Ph.D. in computer science from Yale University, but please don't hold that against him.; Unlike her peers in that 40-something bracket, Margaret Levine Young was exposed to computers at an early age. In high school, she got into a computer club known as the R.E.S.I.S.T.O.R.S., a group of kids who spent Saturdays in a barn fooling around with three antiquated computers. The two professors were classmates and best friends at Dartmouth. When it becomes clear that Stanford's increasingly feminine appearance is making it impossible for him to maintain his male identity in Jamaica, where effeminate boys are vilified and bullied, his parents send him to live with the Coxes. He arrives as a girl with the name Eustacia, and the only people who know about Eustacia's transgender status are Darcy's parents, the Hanover High School superintendent, and the school nurse. When Darcy and Eustacia fall deeply in love, the elder Coxes are faced with a difficult choice between their promise to the Abernathys to keep Eustacia's secret and their wish to protect their homophobic son from the potentially disastrous consequences of his discovering that secret on his own. A sequel, "This Perfect Love," has recently been written by the author's friend Florian Verona.

An interesting novel of a tender relationship and society's dissapproval

One of the greatest thrills of the holiday season is the excitement of discovering an exquisitely wrapped present under the tree, and having no idea what is inside. We hold it, shake it, feel it, weigh it, and do everything we can to peek at its secrets, but often we actually regret the eventual unwrapping. Such is the case with Eustacia's Secret, a love story about two young teenagers in love.

I must admit to having had some trepidation over the way sexuality was treated in the novel. I know Laing had only the best of intentions, and the rather vulgar examples of homophobia were intended to create tension, but it does make for a difficult read. For instance, Darcy’s mother tells her 14 year old son that homosexuals use their anuses and mouths “as vaginas”, and that because there are so few of them, they try to “convince” young men to become homosexual. It's shocking stuff, but authentic in the time period of the novel.

Had it not been for the tenderness of the relationship between Darcy and Eustacia, I’m not sure I could have continued, but that's where the book shines. Despite having been indoctrinated with homophobic thoughts by his mother, Darcy is mature enough to trust his heart, and to not confuse gender with sexuality. When the truth of Eustacia’s nature is revealed, Darcy discounts his mother’s fears of suicidal depression, and declares instead that “there is so much more to my dear, sweet love than a silly appendage.”

Some of the language and terminology here is a bit suspect, and it’s never quite clear whether Eustacia is intersex or transgendered, but I love that the question of her gender was never the focus. In fact, any doubts are swept aside by Eustacia’s lovely post surgical declaration:

“I was born a boy, but my mind and body would have none of it, so with the help of a little operation, I have transitioned into a woman, which suits me very well indeed."

Similarly, Darcy has a bit of an awakening of his own towards the end, which does a lot to redeem the story’s take on sexuality. When speaking of Mr. Hall, the homosexual his mother tried so hard to ‘caution’ him about early on, Darcy describes him as “a wonderful person - an avid sailor and a true gentleman.” He still finds the concept of homosexual acts upsetting, but he can see through the question of sexuality to appreciate the man behind it, just as he is able to see through the question of gender to appreciate the woman at its core.

It may not be the message some readers may crave, but it's a very brave and very realistic attitude that shines because of the societal framework.

Finally, I’d be remiss if I didn’t say a few words about Eustacia’s fascination with I Dream of Jeannie. It’s a very light-hearted and sincere sort of homage, but one that’s also symbolic. It’s what the young man named Stanford is wearing when we first see him, and what the young woman Eustacia is removing when we last see here – a rather fitting, and beautiful sort of progression.

I deducted one star for tedious, long and ubiquitous passages of expert sailing terms; however, the tendency toward high-level and obscure English, including the rather improbably cultured young male love interest from who it is articulated, is much appreciated. While the heroine is all a girl should be, the real gem is the alter personality in the form of "Jeannie"; something anyone that's ever watched television can easily appreciate. Embedded within a technical manual and young romance story, is top transgender fiction with accurate information and very real, sympathetic protagonists with whom the reader can readily identify. In short, "Jeannie" is adorable! Especially when she mimics the part in costume. I really long to see more of her. I pine for a sequel. "The further adventures of 'Jeannie'"... costume and mannerisms intact.

For eccentric, three-dimensional characters and their youthful romance sensitively treated, a believable transgender person written with remarkable insight by the author (which I'm very curious about), and knowledgeable, factual information on a little understood topic, I say Bravo!

A Book with a heart and soul

Human beings are capable of many great things, but in my opinion the biggest shortcoming of man compared to any other members of the animal kingdom, is his ability to hate and transmit hate to his litter. And that's what we find in this book. Homophobia whispered into Darcy's ears since a very young age by his mother. The words chosen by the author were blunt and harsh, but that was and still is the reality that we see.

Unlike most popular romance novels that tend to rely on physical attraction as the main point of the story, this sweet and tender love story between Eustacia and Darcy, go deeper than just meets the eye. It's about loving a person for who they are, accepting people for their qualities, and learning to understand another. I love how Darcy's acceptance of Eustacia opens his will to confront his mother about her prejudice in a very subtle and elegant manner.

This novel is definitely not the type of romance story for lovers of cliche Harlequinesque love stories which serves as pure entertainment. If you're looking to open your horizons, broaden your thoughts, and view the world from a different angle then you should give this book a chance.
