About the Author
New Zealand citizen and US resident Tony Wolf has spent more than thirty-five years in an international career blending the martial and the creative arts. He has authored or edited nine books and numerous articles for journals, anthologies, websites and encyclopedias. His script for the one-act play Satisfaction tied for first place in the 2006 Joining Sword and Pen international playwriting competition. Tony's fight choreography and action design have been featured in more than two hundred stage, screen and video game productions, including cultural fighting styles design for the Lord of the Rings trilogy. A pioneer of motion capture action design, he was also instrumental in the revival of Bartitsu, a mixed martial art created at the turn of the twentieth century.

Essential for the bookshelf of fencers and historical fencers

This is a much overdue study of the first 'modern' revival of historical European martial arts, which happened in the late-Victorian and Edwardian period.

Whilst there have been many books in recent years dedicated to the earliest documented European martial arts, from the medieval period, what has been neglected is a published study of the first people who sought to revive and recreate these ancient martial arts; the likes of Captain Alfred Hutton, Egerton Castle and their contemporaries.

Without these chaps we probably wouldn't have some of the ancient sources we do today, as they collected and documented so many of the manuscripts and books that survive in libraries and archives now. Beyond this, they also wrote about their views on these ancient texts, which gives us a unique view into their views of fencing and martial arts in general.

This book is quite narrow in its scope, but also quite in-depth and exacting for it. It is not a big book, but covers what needs to be covered. It will contain some interesting new bits of information for just about any student of fencing history. It is written in plain English and sets out the subjects in a logical and easily consumed manner.

My only criticisms would be that it is quite pricey for its size and availability outside the USA is not great.

Highly recommended for anybody interested in the history of fencing.

I have been sailing for more than 45 years and for the majority of the time I have sailed alone. Not because I am antisocial but because I enjoy the solitude and the freedom to sail whenever and wherever I choose. I have never wanted to cross an ocean or sail non-stop for days at a time to prove myself and be challenged by storms and high seas, just to modestly sail along the coast to another safe haven or make a short sea passage of no more than 60 miles. If you would like to sail single-handed, either for the same reasons or because you can’t always find crew, maybe some of my experience will be useful to you. Through this book I hope you will gain a little more confidence or try a new technique and make more passages alone. I have always been surprised by the lack of books covering this type of sailing. Most single-handed sailing books are about epic storm-lashed frightening long distance ocean voyages. They do make for exciting reading but do not help people like you or me with our type of sailing. Sailing alone is not that much different to sailing with crew in that the basic techniques of sailing and navigating are the same. The real difference is in the planning, preparation and details. If you ever sail alone, this book can literally save your life. I love this book. It's filled with common sense ideas and hints to make your sailing safe and comfortable. Colin Stroud has sailed since he was a wee lad and it's evident from the first page that he knows what he's talking about. What I like the most about the book is its easy readability. Never are there any tedious lists of do's and don'ts. It's as if Mr. Stroud is sitting next to you sharing a cup of tea and giving you the best of his knowledge of sailing. If you sail-solo or even with a group of friends, this book is an inexpensive piece of equipment that will ensure you have the knowledge to stay safe and secure on inlet, river, bay, lake or even blue water. For a fraction of the price of an inexpensive dock cleat you'll have a boatload of information to keep you safe and secure on your boat. Truly, this is a terrific book.

A Worthwhile and Enjoyable Read

This is a simple, straightforward book that contains some excellent advice. I would have liked it to have gone into greater depth, but it covers critical topics of organizing, setup, maintenance, and maneuvering techniques. Overall, _Solo Coastal Sailing_ is a good resource and worth the few hours it takes to read it.

About the Author
Dr. Lasher has a unique background in education and financial practice that enables him to offer unique, firsthand insights into the world of financial management in his text. Prior to entering full-time academics, he worked in finance at Texas Instruments, Harris Corporation, and the Pacific Telesis organization. He has held positions as a planner, a controller, and a subsidiary CFO. While working in business, he taught evening courses in finance and economics at the University of Dallas, the University of Texas at Dallas, and Golden Gate University in San Francisco. After a successful corporate career, he became a full time author/educator in finance at Nichols College. He has taught and written finance for over 25 years. Dr. Lasher holds a B.S. and an M.B.A. from Columbia University, a Ph.D. from Southern Methodist University, and a J.D from the New England School of Law. He has been a Certified Public Accountant and is a member of the Massachusetts Bar. In addition to Practical Financial Management, he has published books on business planning, franchising, and the strategic management of small firms.

Expectations met - Practical Financial Management

The book contains helpful information needed for the course. Without the book to refer to, the class would have been very tough. The professor did offer additional notes and handouts but much of the homework was in the book. The book has many problem examples and questions at the end of each chapter to further enhance the learning.

This book. Arrived at my house so fast I was very surprised the book Is the exact book that was needed exclusively for my college and that particular class it was one hundred and fifty dollars in the bookstore and only $39 do Amazon great deal.

Book came on time.

For what ever reason, this books flow just did not work for me. I was lost and the wording just did not compute with me. I found it to be a difficult read, much more difficult than accounting classes. Just my opinion though.
