Sailhamer's introduction is an explicitly conservative evangelical argument for a canonical, text-centered approach to the theology of the Old Testament. It is a particularly useful introduction (even for readers who are not conservative or evangelical) because of the care and evenhandedness with which the author describes alternative strategies of interpretation and makes his own choices explicit. The book becomes a kind of flowchart, mapping Sailhamer's choices--of text over event, canon over criticism, confession over description, and diachronic over synchronic interpretation--but also attending with care to alternatives at each step along the way. One could argue that the choices are not so neatly binary as the flowchart implies, but that would be quibbling. On the whole, this is an excellent introductory text. Steve Schroeder

This is a very thorough Introduction to OT Theology. Not for the faint of heart. At times it gets rather redundant and just plain too much information after the point has been made. But a definite for anyone wanting a straight conservative approach to the biblical text and OT theology.

In this book is a serious study of Old Testament Theology."In-Texuality" "Inner Texuality" "inter-texuality" and "Con -Texuality" is the method of exegesis that Dr. Sailhamer explains. He comes from a process of Hermeneutic; Text, Canon, Confessional and diachronic (the opposite views are explained also). Then in the Appendix A he presented an aspect of compositional strategy of Pentateuch, titled:
The Mosaic Law and the Theology of the Pentateuch, Appendix B: Compositional Strategies in the Pentateuch. Also, there is an Appendix C and D

Very Scholarly Old Testament Theology

This book is for those who want an OT theology that is very detailed, highly-technical, and painstakingly exegetical. Sailhamer's book is not like the other OT theology books (e.g., Brevard Childs, Walter Kaiser, Eugene Merrill and Roy Zuck, Ralph Smith, and Bruce Waltke) that deal primarily with themes, messages, and ideas of the OT. The book is primarily hermeneutical and methodological (in fact, the major portion of the book [pp. 29-194] deals with methodology!). If one is looking for a thematical OT theology this book is not for you (try Kaiser, Smith, or Waltke). However, this is an excellent book for those who like to get into the nitty-gritty of OT exegesis and theological methodology. It is a difficult book to read so this book isn't for those who like to cruise through a book.

About the Author

Dahlia K. Remler is Professor at the School of Public Affairs, Baruch College, and the Department of Economics, Graduate Center, both of the City University of New York. She is also a Research Associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research.

Dahlia has been in an unusual mix of disciplinary and interdisciplinary settings. She received a BS in electrical engineering from the University of California at Berkeley, a DPhil in physical chemistry from Oxford University―while a Marshall Scholar―and a PhD in economics from Harvard University. During the Clinton administration’s health care reform efforts, Dahlia held a fellowship at the Brookings Institution to finish her dissertation on health care cost containment. She then held a postdoctoral research fellowship at Harvard Medical School, followed by assistant professorships at Tulane’s and Columbia’s Schools of Public Health, prior to joining the faculty at Baruch. She enjoys comparing and contrasting how different disciplines see the same issues.

Dahlia has published widely in a variety of areas in health care policy, including health care cost containment, information technology in health care, cigarette tax regressivity, simulation methods for health insurance take-up, and health insurance and health care markets. She has also recently started working on higher education and media issues. Her work has appeared in the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, Health Affairs, the Quarterly Journal of Economics, the American Journal of Public Health, Medical Care Research and Review, and many other journals. She blogs on health care policy, higher education and other topics at DahliaRemler.com.

Dahlia lives with her husband, Howard, in New York City, where they enjoy the city’s theaters, restaurants, and parks―and Dahlia enjoys being a complete amateur dancer in some of the city’s superb dance studios.

Gregg G. Van Ryzin is Professor at the School of Public Affairs and Administration, Rutgers University―Newark. He received his BA in geography from Columbia University and his PhD in psychology from the City University of New York. During his doctoral training, he worked as a planner for a nonprofit housing and community development organization in New York City, and he completed his dissertation on low income housing for the elderly in Detroit. He next worked in Washington, D.C., for ICF Inc. and later Westat, Inc. on surveys and program evaluations for the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and other federal agencies. In 1995, he joined the faculty of the School of Public Affairs, Baruch College, where he directed their Survey Research Unit for 8 years. In that role, he helped develop and direct the New York City Community Health Survey, a large-scale behavioral health survey for the city’s health department, and also played a key role in shaping and conducting the city’s survey of satisfaction with government services. He has spent time in Madrid, collaborating with researchers there on the analysis of surveys about public attitudes toward Spanish government policy.

Gregg has published many scholarly articles on housing and welfare programs, survey and evaluation methods, and public opinion about government services and institutions. His work has appeared in the International Review of Administrative Sciences, the Journal of Policy Analysis and Management, the Journal of Public Administration Research and Theory, the Journal of Urban Affairs, Nonprofit and Voluntary Sector Quarterly, Public Administration Review, Public Management Review, Public Performance and Management Review, Urban Affairs Review, and other journals.

Gregg lives in New York City with his wife, Ada (a history professor at NYU), and their daughters Alina and Lucia. They enjoy life in their Greenwich Village neighborhood, escaping on occasion to Spain, Miami, Maine, Cuba, and other interesting places in the world.

Excellent text for research methods classes

The examples are excellent and the authors are skilled at explaining concepts that are new and sometimes difficult for students in clear language that everyone can understand. I used this text last year for my Master's in Public Health Research Methods class as a recommended text. The students loved it so much that from now on I'm replacing the previously required text and am only using this text.

Through a series of horribly unthinkable events, Sara finds herself thrown into a world that is as deadly as it is beautiful. Nothing will stop him from attaining his goal, and no one will stand in his way. He is determined to right a very egregious wrong no matter what it takes, and he will do it by whatever means possible. The one thing that neither counted on was coming in contact in a very dangerous yet compelling way. The secrets and mysteries that lie hidden within the other are the keys to unlocking very real iron chains. Will they discover the truth in time while keeping out of harm’s way, or will past horrors finally catch up and distort the truth even more?

I am still in shock and reeling from this amazingly stunning journey with Sara and Thane. Always kept on the edge of my seat even from the very first word, I am desperate to know what happens next. Two very different yet connected lives converge and collide in this recklessly paced rollercoaster rode. No detail is every insignificant when your life is not your own, and when you are desperate to reach a loved one, nothing can keep you away. Thane and Sara seek two very different goals, but within the other they find a desperately craved solace and a deeply rooted fulfillment that leaves them breathless and bewildered. These characters are so powerful and raw, and I love watching them breathe much needed life into each other. It’s incredible to watch the effect they have on the other, and to begin to learn their stories and how they are unknowingly linked. They are simply stunning, and I couldn’t get enough of them.

Toni Vallan is a truly inspired and insanely talented author who I can’t wait to see bloom into their full potential. Without a doubt, Vallan is definitely a force to be reckoned with! There is something huge and beautiful that grows with each word read in this book that you can’t see or touch, but I felt it with every part of my heart. Keeping genius like this quiet after the beginning of such a superb story as this one will be virtually impossible. Everyone needs to experience the full depth and breathe of this harrowing and heart wrenching journey!

I had a lot of questions at the beginning of Beautiful Collision but I think that's normal

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I had a lot of questions at the beginning of Beautiful Collision but I think that's normal. You're always curious about the stories of each character and how they're going to meet. The answers eventually came so while I read through it was hard sometimes to be wanting the answer but not able to find it at the time.

There were multiple perspectives, including those of Thane and Grey. It was difficult at times reading and seeing the difficulties that Gray especially went through. And then we would get small little clues about her watcher but they didn't really help put things together, just added more questions that I was begging the answers for.

It was certainly and action packed book, and there's a cliffhanger so I honestly am looking forward to the next book so that I can find out what happens next! Toni Vallen is a good writer, and I liked her style of writing.

Kudos to Oxford University Press for this nicely packaged paperback

Hegel is an indispensable philosophy-read. His Phenomenology of the Spirit is primarily concerned with the Consciousness, Self-consciousness, Reason, the Spirit, Religion and finally Absolute Knowing. Hegel [himself] would be a more difficult read if it weren't for this text's lengthy preface on scientific cognition and it's post treatment, also lengthy, analysis. Kudos to Oxford University Press for this nicely packaged paperback.

Not worth 10 dollars- Cheap printing and tons of typos

This version of the Phenomenology is definitely not worth the price. I should have spent a couple more dollars on a different version.
I knew going in how large the book is, but once in your hands, it's like a very poorly bound textbook. The paper is very cheap, almost like thick consumer printer paper. The tiny margins and line spacing in the book makes it very difficult to read what is already a challenging book.
To make it even worse, there are many typos throughout the book. I began reading from the preface and kept running into them, so I decided to leaf through and see if the typos are all through the book, and they are.
All these things put together make reading this book terrible, which is unfortunate for the otherwise great content. I spent about an hour and a half reading it before I had to put it down.
Before purchasing I would consider looking into different editions of this book, which are only a few dollars more.

It will give you a great summary of Hegel. Then approach the book in small bites. It's a slow read, but it is a profound book that truly changed the world of thought.

Hegel assumes the reader already knows the system before he or she starts the phenomenology. But most don't. so go to the above summary first. "the end is the beginning"; that's just the way it is. You must already have a grasp of Hegel's thought before even starting the phenomenology. But it is essential reading.

Good Read!!

I stumbled upon the first book in this series by accident. The first chapter or two I was questionable about the book then it took off. Fortunately this book came out a few days after I finished the first one. In my opinion this one took off from the very beginning. Very Good read. Kept me interested from the very beginning. 'Skippy's' snarkiness is great throughout the book. Very worthwhile. Really looking forward to book 3.

Slow plot progression with typos, but absurdly funny and with no DRM. I recommend it anyway.

I am giving this book an excellent review, although it is rife with typos. The plot is simple(ish) and the writing style bizarre, but the characters are hilarious and the book has no DRM. I will warn that many tropes are used (although I personally don't mind much), the biggest being that the AI is nearly all-powerful. Since he is a remnant of an advanced race (of course long departed and no one else understands them!), this does make some sense. For example, he has the ability to hack any computer nearly instantly (or faster), but this can be explained by the fact that the aliens all have stolen their tech from the next-higher tier of alien, without understanding or modifying it much, while humanity is simply not advanced enough to use anything challenging yet. This results in a science fiction story where humanity is not even remotely the star of the show, even while it is still the main point of view.

The premise is that humanity, with no native star-faring technology whatsoever, just got ambushed by warfare by proxy between impossibly powerful alien races. None of the races are more than neutral to humanity, but in the previous book, a certain set of coincidences has resulted in an Elder AI having been gifted (inflicted would be more accurate) to humanity. Given that it is self described as a horrible person, this has not always been free of friction. One of the many amusing interactions between it and the captain of the stolen alien starship resulted in an edited address to the crew that shows a monkey superimposed on said captain's image.

In this book, the AI is piloting the ship for the Terran crew, who are attempting to help the insulting AI find the Collective, a network of AIs left from when the Elders transcended, so that he can be with his kind and recover his memory. Numerous insults to the "monkeys" are traded and some interesting battles take place. They have no luck finding a working com node, but they discover that someone has been misusing Elder tech for nefarious purposes. The plot is extended with a bunch of sub-plots about each attempt to find the Elder tech they need, which usually involves a space battle or some other random encounter to spice things up.

I should warn that the book uses some strong language.

I think he ran out of idea for this book

This book was not as good as the first and I agree with the comments about the need for an editor and chopping out the sections that re-state something that were already talked about in previous chapters (sometimes multiple times). To me, the author was out of ideas for this book, there was a lot of “padding” in the Newark plot and bring in a new race of aliens (shadowing next book?) added nothing. Also the characters were saying stupid things like; “if I meet the race that did this 2 million years ago, they will pay”. What? Should I kill Norwegian because of what the Vikings did 800 years ago? But don’t give up; the third book I am reading matches the quality of the first book. But alas, he still hasn't gotten a editor.

Christopher Goodell is the Director of Applied Research for WEST Consultants, Inc. He is a licensed professional engineer and a Diplomate of Water Resources Engineering with the American Academy of Water Resources Engineers. He spent over two years at the Hydrologic Engineering Center working on the development of HEC-RAS and has been teaching HEC-RAS to professionals since 2001. Mr. Goodell regularly gives lectures and presentations on HEC-RAS and is the author of The RAS Solution, an online help site dedicated to HEC-RAS. He resides in Portland, Oregon with his wife and three daughters.

Great book!

This book is a valuable tool for HEC-RAS users in order to automate procedures by controlling the program externally. The book is suitable for programming beginners considering that describes stepwise routines for controlling HEC-RAS from Microsoft Excel using VBA; however it also provides the necessary information for experienced programmers who want to do their own developments.

The included examples are really useful for practical purposes. I strongly recommend this book specially if you need to perform computationally demanding tasks as Monte Carlo simulations.

It looked like a giant butterfly fl uttering through space, the wings of its solar panels extended to gather in the power from the sun’s rays. Different instruments attached at strange angles gave it an awkward and fragile look. But it was strong—strong enough to survive as it sailed silently across the frigid, bleak, black expanse of open space.

With each second it left Earth farther and farther behind. But attached to the satellite was a small part of its planet of origin, a gold disc showing a diagram of our solar system and an illustration of a man and a woman with their hands open in a gesture of friendship. No one could hope to predict, but maybe, just maybe, this wanderer might someday meet somebody in its travels.
�
First it travelled toward the giant of the solar system, the planet Jupiter. The journey of 759 million kilometres took nearly three years. Arcing into a perfect elliptical orbit above the poisonous atmosphere, it began its task. The lifeless satellite bristled with activity as it observed, recorded, analyzed, and transmitted information. Never before had man observed this mysterious planet at such close range. With this job completed the satellite was ordered out of orbit. Using its booster rockets and the gravity of the planet, it was slingshot farther out toward the more distant planets at the very edge of the solar system.
�
It was connected to Earth by a continuous trickle of information, like the string on a kite. Travelling at 300,000 kilometres per second, the signals raced back to Earth as the satellite continued on its relentless journey. With each passing hour it moved a further 17,000 kilometres away from Earth, and to places never before visited by man or his instruments. Six years after leaving Jupiter, having made close passes of five different planets, it passed beyond the outermost orbit of the outermost planet. In breaking this imaginary line, it left behind the solar system of its birth, but it refused to die. It kept travelling, kept recording, kept transmitting.
�
No one could have believed that despite the passing of eleven years and more than 24 billion kilometres, the satellite still had the will to live. As it rocketed farther and farther it continued to send back its messages: a faint, feeble voice coming from somewhere out there. Like a little lost child in the dark night sky, it called out, “I’m here. I’m still here.”
�
The scientists who had dreamed and conceived and then watched the life of the satellite would have marvelled at its continued existence. But the country that had sent this satellite skyward, the Soviet Union, no longer existed. It had been broken into smaller pieces, none of which now had the will or the resources to track the ongoing journey away from our solar system. The satellite called out, “Look at this!” but nobody was there to hear.
�
Thirty-three years after its launch, twenty-two years after it left our solar system, the satellite cruised toward a small planetary body. With the gentle pull of gravity it settled into a perfect orbit. This new home was a lifeless chunk of rock with a diameter of 500 kilometres, roughly one-sixth the diameter of Earth’s moon. This became the centre of the satellite’s universe as it sailed around and around and around, once every fourteen hours. And like the good machine that it was, it started to observe, record, analyze, and transmit its findings.

Just by chance, somebody was listening. The satellite transmitted its messages in its only true language, the language of mathematics. Its faint signals were accidentally heard and translated.
�
At first nobody thought it could be possible that the traveller still existed. This was cause for great celebration. With each orbit, at fourteen-hour intervals, as it faced toward Earth, it sent back information. But the messages didn’t seem to make sense. Somehow the satellite appeared to be moving closer. Somehow the world that it was attached to was moving closer. And the one message that the satellite wasn’t transmitting was the most important—perhaps the most important message in the history of mankind.

Truly Superb!!! Although I'm a "you create your own reality" believer [VERY detailed review]

First I should say I'm a lover of Michael's first book "The Untethered Soul" which radically transformed my life, so I pre-ordered this one and anxiously awaited. Before I got the book, I wasn't sure if I'd totally buy into the premise of "complete surrender" because I'm more in the arena of "you create your own reality" not to mention believing in parallel universes etc. etc.

Michael's book is a totally different angle - life just happens, don't try to figure out why and how it's happening, you're not doing any of it, just follow life, and it'll be just fine. So with great intrigue I was looking forward to reading it. Even though I knew his perspective on life was different than mine, I do believe in surrender - meaning it's fine to envision something but then completely let go and allow the Universe to do its thing. So even if I used Michael's viewpoint in that way, I was open to hearing what he had to share on the topic of surrendering.

By the way, some chapters ended with such an incredible promise of what will unfold next that you just had to keep reading. I told my son, "OK, leave me alone. I'll be in the sunroom for 5 hours - not getting up until this book is done!" I was up until after 1am, but it was done. I got both the audio book (read by the author) and the paperback.

UNTETHERED SOUL VS SURRENDER EXPERIMENT
Untethered Soul freed me from the chatter of my mind. Although I had been familiar with the concepts of not allowing your thoughts to control you, Michael Singer explained it so radically clear, that my own transformation came via the Untethered Soul. Or so I thought. I might need to go back and re-read Untethered Soul because The Surrender Experiment was mind-blowing.

To me, Untethered Soul was the message of "You are NOT your thoughts AND.... you don't have to just blindly follow your thoughts." Surrender Experiment, however, took that concept quite a bit further. Surrender Experiment was more about "What if you went ahead and did the very thing your thoughts made you fearful or resistant about doing?" and instead saw those opportunities as Life delivering to you your next task/action/decision. I had MANY jaw-dropping moments witnessing JUST how far Michael took that concept. Freakin' mind-blowing! Surrender Experiment was somewhat of a personal demonstration of what was taught in Untethered Soul and then some - totally riveting.

INITIAL REACTIONS
The first couple "life delivered" stories he shared, I was kinda like "Eh, that's nice but really not that extraordinary." (but not to worry that changed as I continued reading!)

My other initial reaction was toward the beginning of the book when I read one of the first stories of how he did NOT give into the chattering resistance of his mind. My reaction was "What?!!! That's nuts! Crap, there's no way I'd give in to a situation like that!" In rebellion, I shut the book and walked away feeling uncertain that I'd wanna keep reading... 30min later I feel drawn in.

I reminded myself that I can read any book and decide to use what resonates and discard what does not. Well hey, at least that perspective got me reading it again. SO freakin' glad I did!! (although I'll admit my reaction of "No way! He did NOT just allow that to happen!" re-occurred as I continued reading the book - see "is resistance holding me back" below)

WHAT I REALLY ENJOYED

Surrender when you feel resistance. (Chp 30):
This made VERY aware of just how many thoughts of RESISTANCE crossed my mind. Untethered Soul made me aware of the constant chatter, but Surrender Experiment made me acutely aware of thoughts of RESISTANCE which was truly transformative. Through the stories of his own thoughts of resistance I became aware of my own... painfully aware of my own (in a good way).

Refusing income:
Initially he refused to be paid by someone who was insisting to pay him. Sounds like he had that "too spiritual to receive payment" concept going on - a lot of "spiritual" people experience that so it was good to watch that play out in Michael's life. He admitted that he undercharged for his services quite a bit. That refusal to be paid was a form of mental resistance that he overcame later - clearly he shed resistance to accepting money given the millions he experienced in his companies.

Mental concept separating worldly and spiritual dissolves:
It was cool to witness the dissolving of his concepts "separating worldly and spiritual" as he puts it. For anyone who thinks spirituality is meditating, finding as much isolation as you can, and doing a whole bunch of spiritual practices, get ready to have your perspective shifted a bit. Michael found a way to merge deep spirituality while making millions. In fact, his spirituality deepened as a result of his many "worldly" encounters. He shows you how his spirituality deepened DURING his worldly encounters. What's more is that he often credits his everyday experiences in life and business with deepening his spirituality MORE than meditation and isolation. Truly dumbfounded by how it effortlessly came together.

Also, most people who think about being in a spiritual community, are often doing so to escape dealing the "worldly drama" or "non-spirituality" of regular life and to be surrounded only by like-minded people. That's the way Michael Singer started out as well - alone out in the woods. But somehow he merged living in his spiritual community with the experiences of running businesses etc. FROM that very reclusive spiritual community. And he did so with uniquely remarkable life-changing results.... merely by surrendering to events of his life.

Is resistance holding ME back:
Many times, Michael surrendered to a life situation that seemed utterly ridiculous to surrender to and the voice in my head said "You have GOT to be kidding me!!! Why would you just give in to that?!" Someone builds a house on YOUR land without asking you.... an irate customer demands you pull your workmen off one job and come do hers immediately. Just say OK to both??!! Huh??!! Are you kidding me right now??!!

Then.... the rest of the story unfolds and life not only fully supports him but over delivers leaving me shaking my head with a smile realizing the gem this book really is. I know it sounds ridiculous but ya gotta read the book to really get this folks... ya just gotta read the book. I can't even explain it here. Truly....

By chapter 34 my resistance to this level of surrender was overtaken by fascination with what may actually be possible that I have not yet tapped into. (yes it took me THIRTY-FOUR chapters to start feeling a great deal of acceptance to what he was saying). :) Suddenly I'm realizing that my own mental/internal resistance to change (and to what life put in front of me) probably had me turn down more opportunities in my life than I could ever count because the voice in my head resisted it in some way. My personal preferences won most of the time disallowing the natural flow of life. Wow, I see this SO clearly now! Unreal.

Life hands you the next task:
Loved this quote "I'm sitting on a tiny planet spinning in out of space and this is the next task that life handed to me. I'm doing this as a gift to the Universe." Shifted my perspective quite radically especially considering certain events occurring my life right now, and the many events I disallowed in the past.

Follow your Bliss:
Although the book doesn't specifically say "follow your bliss" Michael was a living example of precisely that in many instances. He just allowed himself to fall in love with whatever he felt passionate about and lo and behold life threw him all kinds of opportunities that lined up with precisely that. It's an awesome reminder that the Universe will support you in your passion. Often times, we don't believe that we can make money with our passion so we go do something else. Pay very close attention to how that multi-million software company got started - THAT was an incredible display of "follow your bliss" supported by the Universe a million fold.

Awesome Intuitive flow
I loved reading about the beautiful resonant inner flow of creativity Michael experienced where things just flowed out of him - clearly from an amazingly inspired place that delivered projects so effortlessly that it was pretty much like meditating. Really opened me up to experiencing more of this flow and reading how he got into the flow was cool as well.

Is this about the "Art of Allowing?"
OK I know the author probably is NOT into the Law of Attraction. BUT.... at some point I became aware that Michael Singer was remaining in a "state of allowing" that a lot of "Law of Attraction" people talk, preach about, and write books about, and do seminars about but don't really know how to experience. In a way, THIS book is the "art of allowing" LIVED (not just preached).... but that's just my perspective.

Learning to quiet or ignore the voice in his head also provided a tremendous a level of peace in tumultuous situations. Loved how he demonstrated just how easy it is to do that. I followed his guidance and immediately was able to practice the feeling of calm and serenity in any given moment. Very cool. That very peace, is ALSO allowing the law of attraction to work in his favor (I think.) Many people try to "do things" to attract desired experiences never once realizing that attracting is a BEING experience (not a doing one). Michael Singer fully surrenders, experiences tremendous peace and joy in life, and (of course) naturally attracts amazing life experiences (that he did NOT ever envision, set an intention for, asked the Universe for or make a vision board for I might add). Mmm hmm.... there's more than ONE way to live this thing called life folks.

UNANSWERED QUESTIONS & PONDERINGS

What about a combo of desire plus surrender:
Michael's teachings are all about "Surrender your preferences and just follow the stream of naturally occurring life events." And to his credit, he presents a mountain of evidence as to how well this has worked for him. That said, other authors (like Trevor Blake multi-million dollar author of Three Simple Steps and also the book Parallel Realities of Self) embraces the combo of "desire/preferences + surrender."

Personally, I see nothing inherently wrong with having desires and preferences for different life experiences - just don't think your puny little human mind has a better plan than the Universe - dream, envision, then fully surrender to the magic of the Universe. I'd say Michael's book both expanded my view and instantly influenced my experience of the surrender/allowing part.

Always do what life puts in front of you?
At a certain point in the book, he shared that he chose to NOT accept different biz opportunities so as to not sacrifice his meditation practice. But he also says "do what life puts in front of you." I felt a bit conflicted in reading that as life was putting lots of biz opportunities in front of him but he went with his preference for his twice-daily meditation practice, but hey, no big deal... I still love this book. :)

There was also the time when a colleague was impressing upon Michael to build a bigger house for himself on the land he owned. In previous stories where others were impressing upon him to do something, he took it as a "sign from life" and surrendered. But when his colleague was impressing upon him to build a nicer house for himself, he said no, he'll just wait for the timing of life (which he did with remarkable results) but still... I wondered.... that whole surrender and preferences thing isn't so black and white is it?

Do what life puts in front of you even if you really don't enjoy it?
Here's the thing... what's working in Michael's favor is that he fully BELIEVES that the Universe will support him no matter what. That unwavering belief is a big part the magic in all of this (see my overall comment below). So at times, he says "yes" to opportunities he really does NOT want to do. That left me a bit concerned for readers who may blindly throw themselves into situations they despise which will then create very undesired life experiences.

Remember, Michael did NOT allow himself to feel "despise" for any of the things he accepted but initially felt dislike for. THAT's the key and it created amazing results for Michael. If you cannot follow that ability to turn "initial dislike" into "full positive love and acceptance" for things you really don't wanna do, then you may not wanna blindly follow what Michael's doing in this book. (again... see my overall comment below). Personally, I believe the Universe has infinite opportunities available for us all to experience and it's much more fun for me to align with the manifestation of enjoyable ones, so I choose to do that. :)

Is this all just too perfect?
At times, after reading one life event after another that miraculously turned out just fine, I found myself wondering if this is just almost too perfect. The book is doing an awesome job of articulating a series of selected events that were perfectly timed and that worked out beautifully each time. BUT.... any stories of following whatever life brought to you only to have it blow up in your face? Surely that MUST have happened a few times in 40 years.

Can't help but wonder... were there other events occurring that did not go so well. Quite a few staff members were divinely timed hires. Certainly not all hired employees showed up effortlessly and perfectly timed (for example). Yes, there was the FBI raid where all hell seemed to break loose.... but my mind wondered.... did Michael feel like the employee (who was taking kickbacks) was an effortless and divinely timed hire when that employee showed up? But to be fair, there were other stories of "things seemingly gone wrong... then turned out just fine."

Michael says the growth of the company was astonishing and with it came all the problems associated with a rapidly growing technology company. But doesn't quite say how those typical problems were experienced. Were they all experienced with effortless serendipity? Or was it the typical corporate drama.

Wait, there WERE some preferences expressed:
The book seems to be heavily embracing the "surrender all of your preferences" concept but there were times when I thought "Well isn't THAT a preference?" For example, why NOT simply surrender to the trees being cut down (Ch 38) vs attempting to preserve it which is what Michael did. Why not say "Hey, so trees are being chopped down in our beautiful neighboring surroundings... life just delivered that so I'll just accept it." Nope, Michael had a preference for saving the trees and leased the land to save them. Scratched my head on that one as it seemed like a clear desire/preference to me. The outcome from leasing the land was pretty cool but still.... I wondered.

Mind vs Spirit/Intuition talking
He talks about not listening to the resistant chatter going on in your mind, but what about being guided by the Spirit within to NOT do something? The book didn't address intuitively NOT doing something. It was either focused on not listening to the mind or not resisting whatever life put in front of you. Perhaps he perceives NOT listening to the mind as, by default, listening to your Spirit/intuition? If you're just being the observer of your thoughts, then by default you are indeed following the Spirit? Not sure, but I was left wondering about that as the concept of intuition wasn't addressed (except for the intuitive flow of inspiration in completing projects).

Merge this with Law of Attraction maybe?
Perhaps the Law of Attraction that many Spiritual/new-age people are trying to "master" or "use" isn't as complicated as we make it. ALSO, to fly in the face of what this book is about, MAYBE... just MAYBE.... one can indeed envision preferences and desires, then promptly move your daggone butt out of the way, surrendering to the natural flow of whatever shows up, expecting no particular outcome and remaining completely unattached. I say MAYBE.... yet I'm aware there's plenty of evidence of this being true (e.g. Three Simple Steps by Trevor Blake or Parallel Realities of Self by Frederick Dodson, and a bazillion other authors).

OVERALL
Amazing book! A totally riveting page-turner! Five stars all the way! Another masterpiece delivered by Michael Singer and I am SO glad I bought both the paper-back and the audio version. I read them both together - kinda like Michael reading it to me (cool that this audiobook was read by him - Untethered Soul audiobook was not read by him but it was still awesomely read).

The powerful stories in this book almost... ALMOST... made me second-guess my belief in "you create your own reality." But alas, once the last chapter was read, I realized I have my own slew of stories to support creating my own reality and so do others who do not follow the "surrender all your preferences." teaching (again e.g. Three Simple Steps by Trevor Blake or Parallel Realities of Self by Frederick Dodson). It's awesome reading books like The Surrender Experiment however, because you get clear validation that there is indeed more than one way to dance to the music of life and experience amazing results.

Ever wondered how authors can provide such amazing supporting evidence of their very different teachings/beliefs? Easy peasy... it's Universal Law - that which you believe must become your reality. Michael Singer believes in "surrender your preferences and life will support you" and that became his reality. Trevor Blake believes in "set your intentions then let go and allow the Universe to do it's magic" and that became his reality. Frederick Dodson believes in "get clear on what you want, shift into that parallel reality and you'll experience it" and magically, that became his reality. It's Universal Law at work - whatever you firmly believe will happen MUST therefore become your reality (even bad stuff I might add - be careful!). So just choose your preferred "awesome sauce" recipe that resonates and flow with it. We are THAT powerful as creators of our own human experiences - makes life very cool I think, don't you? :)

As I said WAY back in the beginning of this review, I take what resonates and discard what does not when it comes to *any* spiritual teacher. Love Michael Singer's work a whole lot, yet I believe we're each here to have our own unique life experiences on this earthly ride. At the end of anyone's "spiritual teachings" remember to pause, lay aside the excitement of discovering something new, take a breather, then go within... meditate.... get quiet enough to access your OWN inner compass/guidance, your own intuition, the Spirit within you.... to see what aspects of that new teaching was actually meant for YOU at this time.

For me, my own life experiment will be a merger of expressing my desires to the Universe AND (thanks to Michael) surrendering a whole lot more to whatever shows up. Different than Michael for sure... and we'll see where that little experiment takes me. Hey, life is a playground and I'm gonna play it any way I like darnit! :)

The Surrender Experiment

The surrender experiment is an amazing true life story of Author Michael A. Singer and his journey and experiment in completly letting go and letting life take control after having a deep spiritual awakening.

First off I have to say I wasn't sure I was going to like the book all that much because I find most true life story books to be boring.This book is the exception.I was mesmerized reading the book, that at times I would close it and say "wow that is so amazing".Michael A. Singers life story really moved me, it amazed me how he went from a dropout earning no more than like $350 a month and living out in his van to a teacher,a contractor,a programer,a business man and a yogi. It's truly inspiring how he managed to surrender through every up and down in his life, and how he overcame even the most of difficult of challenges.

I actually could relate to him to an extent about finding yourself through solitude and meditation and yoga, and trying to quite that nagging inner "ego" voice.So after finishing the book I had so much inspiration to try the surrender experiment just like he did, and also go deeper in my yoga and meditation practice.Overall I really enjoyed this book so much that I even ordered his other book "The Untethered Soul" and it has really opened my eyes to the power of the universe and life when you go deep inside of yourself and surrender.

I received a copy of this book for a honest review and all of my opinions are my own.

Great Follow-Up to The Untethered Soul!

As I begin a third year serving as President and CEO of the Institute of Noetic Sciences, I’ve been reflecting on what have been the most and least effective approaches to leadership. How can I best help our scientists, educators and all staff members work in their own particular “zone of genius?” What are the most effective ways to negotiate collaborations or conflicts with both strength and with heart? How best to navigate legal, financial, and contractual arrangements? All while keeping the organization focused on the core work of re-enchanting the world through the science and application of consciousness.

The other day, just as I was reflecting on these questions, I received an advance copy of my friend Michael Singer’s new book The Surrender Experiment: My Journey into Life’s Perfection. I immediately made it my morning meditation book, and perhaps not surprisingly, it’s been exactly the right thing at the right time.

In 2007, IONS’ publishing imprint Noetic Books had the distinct honor of co-publishing, along with New Harbinger Publications, a beautiful and quietly profound book by Michael Singer entitled The Untethered Soul: The Journey Beyond Yourself. Featured on Oprah Winfrey’s “Super Soul Sunday” and beloved by many, the book soared to the top of the New York Times bestseller list in 2012, and remains one of the most popular transformational books of our time.

The Untethered Soul is a deeply spiritual and elegantly simple book about how to free yourself from limitations and discover inner peace. It’s made even more interesting by being written by a man who has for decades lived in the woods at the meditation center he built, while simultaneously becoming founding CEO of a billion dollar public company.

Now, in The Surrender Experiment, Michael tells the remarkable story of that personal journey. It all started with a simple yet radical idea: to let go of personal fears and desires and allow life to take its course. Michael made a commitment early on in his spiritual practice that in general he would say “Yes” to what life asked him to do, and see what happened. What happened was nothing short of extraordinary.

Throughout the book, younger versions of Michael are offered opportunities that on the surface may not have always made sense, but end up resulting in exactly the right thing, time and time again. As he hones his ability to let go and lean in to whatever life offers, extraordinary things happen. The perfect people for roles at his meditation center and business show up at just the right time. Land purchases expand both the business and the meditation center in exactly the ways needed, though impossible to predict. Michael’s seemingly unrelated occupations build upon one another along a seemingly meandering pathway that eventually leads to being founding CEO of a billion-dollar medical software company, whose software was so revolutionary it was archived for historical purposes at the Smithsonian Institution.

Now until near the end of the book, a skeptical mind might say that it is a bit too convenient for someone so incredibly lucky to write a book about going with life’s flow. Easy for you to say, Michael! Things just seem to go your way! That’s until the major crisis hits. I won’t share the spoilers, except to say that Michael plan of “allowing life to unfold as it will” continues to work, even in the midst of nearly a decade of tremendous challenges. It’s an engrossing and inspiring story, and a transformative read.
