Wonderful Story

I was pleasantly surprised by this book! It was a lovely story and both myself and my 5 year old daughter fell in love with it. When I purchased the tooth fairy doll, Amazon recomended this book. I knew nothing about it or the author. I highly recomend it, especially for little girls. Only because it seems femanine to me, the story focuses around a little girl who is having a hard time giving up her tooth. They need it to complete the queen's throne. I was able to get some ideas for our tooth fairy family traditions of reading the story the night before the tooth fairy arrives, leaving pixie dust on the pillow and leaving a gold coin in exchange for a tooth. The book came with a gold coin as well as several envelopes stuffed with letters to the tooth fairy, letters from the tooth fairy, posters and a finger game. The book art is wonderful as well.

My 6 year old son LOVES it

This book is so cute. It is a very girly book but my rough-and -tumble 6 year old son LOVES it. What makes the book very unique is the correspondence (envelopes with letters attached to every other page) between the little girl and the tooth fairy. There is a fairy-sized poster, a riddle game, and a coin at the end with a certificate. It helps answer his questions about the tooth fairy: what does she do with the tooth, are there many tooth fairies or just one, etc. For myself, I LOVE the fact that it reinforces good dental habits. A coin for a white tooth in good condition (no cavities!).

My brother is a dentist and I just recommended it for his office waiting room!

Don't let your kids or grandkids lose teeth without this book!

My granddaughter is 6 1/2 yrs old, and just beginning to lose her teeth. This interactive book is written so well, and the illustrations draw both child and adult into the story. The challenge of reading it together is just perfect for my first-grader. She will go to the book every time she's about to lose a tooth. My only criticism is the microscopic size of type used on the inserts -- very difficult to read, in the best of light.

This theory was developed to address what the author sees as a perpetual mismatch between present theories in social gerontology and existing empirical data.

The development towards gerotranscendence can involve some overlooked developmental changes that are related to increased life satisfaction, as self-described by individuals. The gerotranscendent individual typically experiences a redefinition of the Self and of relationships to others and a new understanding of fundamental existential questions:

• The individual becomes less self-occupied and at the same time more selective in the choice of social and other activities.
• There is an increased feeling of affinity with past generations and a decreased interest in superfluous social interaction.
• The individual might also experience a decrease in interest in material things and a greater need for solitary "meditation." Positive solitude becomes more important.
• There is also often a feeling of cosmic communion with the spirit of the universe, and a redefinition of time, space, life and death.

Gerotranscendence does NOT imply any state of withdrawal or disengagement, as sometimes erroneously believed. It is not the old disengagement theory in new disguise. Rather, it is a theory that describes a developmental pattern beyond the old dualism of activity and disengagement.

The author supports his theory with insightful qualitative in-depth interviews with older persons and quantitative studies. In addition, Tornstam illustrates the practical implications of the theory of gerotranscendence for professionals working with older adults in care settings. A useful Appendix contains suggestions of how to facilitate personal development toward gerotranscendence.

Gerotranscendence: A Developmental Theory of Positive Aging

Lars Tornstam is a pioneer in the field of gerontology having led the educational and advocacy movement on behalf of older people in Sweden and Denmark. I heard about him through studying Joan Erikson's work on expanding the Eriksonian Stage Theory beyond the original 8 stages which she writes about in The Life Cycle Completed. This book of Dr Tornstam's is one of the best books I have read in my 10 years of studying aging. His articulate descriptions support what I have experienced often in my service as a psychotherapist and case manager and loved one of many people in their 80's and 90's including my own beloved 92 year old mother. I highly recommend this book and think it should be part of gerontological training programs everywhere.

At last, someone is listening to older people!

This is a refreshing book on aging. At last, someone in a position of authority is daring to find some positive aspects of getting old. For much too long psychologists and geriatric "experts" have been stuck in the rut of viewing old age as being only pathological in its nature. Lars Tornstam, a Swedish gerontologist, was inspired to investigate and write this book by a discrepancy he witnessed between theories of aging and what older people actually said about their experience of it. The result- a theory that there may be some positive developments which occur in the process of aging. "It's all downhill from here" may just be a lot of prejudiced bunk!

Find out what older people have to say about it for themselves. Their views are not all just the result of dementia. Nature provides positive development in all the other stages of human life. Why not in old age too? I highly recommend this book for all those interested in the aging process (we all get there sometime). It may be the start of a new and valid perspective. For a long time people thought the earth was flat- it certainly looks like it through the senses, doesn't it? Put those stereotyped views of old age away, you may be glad that you did when you get there! A highly readable and understandable book.

I came across this book online, and I am astounded at the depth and accuracy of this manuscript! Thank you for the immense work, research and dedication put into this amazing text. This book provides a scholarly text to many of us whom have had an inner transformation through similar revelation, but unfortunately don't fit into the institutional dogmatic structure that has become Christianity. It provides an accurate explanation of where institutional Christianity has missed the profound work of God in Christ, and of how to get into the depth of God's love.

Don't bother with the Kindle Edition

This is a great book indeed, and I looked forward to having it on my Kindle in a nice portable format. However, none of the pictures or helpful charts can be enlarged, rendering a lot of the book useless. It's very hard to read descriptions of an exercise, but not be able to see the pictures well enough to really see what they mean.

Then, the helpful charts, such as "Guidelines for Shaping Aim For It", suffer from the same problem. The font size is way too small to read, and doesn't enlarge no matter how you change the zoom.

So, yeah, great book, but the Kindle edition is only 2 stars in my book. Buy the paperback instead.

I am an Agility noob but a dog-trainer who is relatively versed in the positive reinforcement/clicker realm and I think this book is absolutely essential and invaluable for anyone wanting to REALLY do Agility. All the components necessary to be SOLID performers and LOVE doing it are taught to both humans and dogs alike in this book. It is very large and a bit daunting at first, but each step to teach first the foundation skills, then the skills needed to prevent the usual problems, then the equipment themselves, and then how to put it all together is ALL in here. Yes you can take a class, and yes there are lots of them out there,but most of them skip the basics before putting dogs on the equipment because they believe most people will get impatient with the "foundation":skills. But how do you get a dog to truly LOVE slamming that teeter-totter down, or really RACE around the ring? It's in here! If the dogs can't actually compete before they are 15 months old, what do you do to help them when they are pups? That is all in here too. I am literally reading it cover to cover, and every page is full of solid, useful information and advice. And even if you don't want to take it to competition level, the principles used about the RELATIONSHIP between dog and handler and how to foster it using the sport of Agility are spot-on IMHO.

I can also use it to evaluate any class I take; this book is showing me what happens to the Agility performance when classes cut corners or skip steps, and by reading this book I will be more prepared to discuss and evaluate any additional training I receive.

One last comment - buy the actual book, not the digital version, because being able to quickly flip back and forth between sections and being able to actually see what is going on in the photographs is more than worth the added cost. I read this in reviews before I bought my copy. I am REALLY glad I followed their advice, so I am repeating it to you, O reader of reviews. :)

Examination by an owner of the first Defender's Bible

I imagine that some people are wondering what's different about the New Defender's (ND) compared to the original Defender's (OD). Here is my examination.

-The Main Text: It's the same double column but with no center margin references. Thus the text seems larger. There seems to be a lot more editorial section headings. For example, each of the seven vials in Revelations are split into chunks of text with the corresponding headings (ex. "First Vial," "Second Vial," etc.). There are end-of-verse notes that direct the reader to related passages and define archaic words. The definition of archaic words and phrases might be helpful, but the text seems more cluttered because of the in-text reference marks. The definitions of archaic words seem fairly accurate and conservative (ex. "servants of righteousness" is NOT defined as "slaves of righteousness" as in modern Bibles, neither is "superstitious" defined as "religious" in Acts 17:22. BUT "world" is defined as "age" in numerous places {some Christian scholars argue that "aeon" means "world [as an aspect of time]"} and "dragon {tannin}" is sometimes defined as a contemporary animal {how unfortunate in a "creationist" Bible}, and "Lucifer" is defined as "literally, Day Star", however any KJV with the original translator notes would have this alternate definition for "Lucifer"). The definitions are given in British English (ex. "armour" instead of "armor"). The ND also retains italics indicating words supplied by the translators, whereas the OD does not. Exotic names are spelled out using the "self-pronouncing method" (ex. "Zedekiah" is "Zed-e-ki'-ah"). This might be helpful to some, but I found that it clutters the text. The OD text, which does not have in-text-references, italics, and self-pronouncing names, seems to flow better. If you're keen on readability, the OD might be better. If you're keen on information for study purposes or if you are new to KJV's archaisms the ND is might be better.

-Appendices: There are new sections (ex. "The Creationist Faith of Our Founding Fathers," and "A Creationist's Defense of the KJV"). Whereas the layout of the OD seems to have more white spaces (wasted spaces, perhaps) the new layout of the Appendices looks sleeker and compact. In defending the KJV in the appendix, Morris takes the moderate position that the KJV should be used because it's the most reliable and well-written translation available for English speakers today.

-Study Notes: The font is noticeably larger than that of the OD. In fact, the font size of the notes is the same as that of the main text. The majority of notes remain the same. Some new notes are added and some old notes are expanded. Whereas the OD has many pages with no notes (in certain parts of the Old Testament), the ND has notes on almost all the pages. There seems to be more notes on archeological discoveries. However, some alleged contradictions of numbers (ex. between 2 Chronicles 9:25 and 1 Kings 4:26), which could be resolved upon close examination, are still unfortunately explained away as scribal errors.

-Size of the Book: The ND is considerably thicker than the OD (the genuine leather edition is slightly over 1.5 inches {4cm} in thickness).

-Subjective Conclusion: The New Defender's is a better "study Bible" than the original Defender's. Yes, the main text is harder to read (not harder to see), but it contains more information. The study notes, since they are the same size and font as the main text, can sometimes overpower the main text, especially on a page where the notes take up most of the space on the page. I read another KJV with plain text and large font when I just want to read the main text. For study purposes, I make this New Defender's my primary choice.

Magnum Opus of Dr. Henry Morris

This study Bible is the lifetime achievement of the late Dr. Henry Morris of Creation Research in California. This edition is the 2nd edition that is several hundred pages longer and more comprehensive. He finished this work before he died and it is a work of art. The notes essentially are intelligent and fair commentaries on the Text of the KJV Bible, which text is set in easy to read format. The entire Bible is reader friendly and contemporary in visual appearance. The page notes under the text are detailed and comprehensive, not copying any other Study Bible. There is limited scientific vocabulary referring to weaknesses of pantheism and evolutionary theory, but Dr. Morris shines in his comments on New Age, cults, End-times [financial global controls-James chapter 5] etc. After the Bible text notes are dozens of pages of commentary on World Religions and current issues. The entire project is well-done, and any conservative-oriented theological student will be pleased. It is not a legalistic approach, but definitely a straightforward and no-compromise approach with deep intelligence [Dr. Morris had 3 Doctorates].

The KJV New Defenders Study Bible is just that, a great study Bible.Anyone interested in understanding what the scriptures really say should consider purchasing this Bible. I know I shall enjoy reading this Bible for years to come.
